yes, this is suppose to help with emissions, 2-3 minutes "ish" after start-up is normal, this is the reason the correct glow plugs are so important. Sent a price question out to a supplier and got the following response if anyone thinks that they want to pick up the reigns for a L400 plug group buy, let me know, and I will give you contact e-mail.

We have tried many different brands of glow plugs for the 4M40 with most aftermarket brands failing remarkably soon after installation. These failures include the ADL Blueprint, HKT, Hyundai and a german brand that are being sold locally. We warranty our work and have replaced many sets due to premature failure. Better to buy good once than two or three sets of cheap. The key seems to be that the glow plugs will be glowing for up to three minutes after the engine starts and unless they are the true ceramic glow plugs (Mitsubishi or NGK) they cannot withstand the long cycle time and so fail. Mitsubishi charge an arm and a leg for theirs but the NGK are far more reasonable as you can almost buy a set of four for the price of one genuine. Looking at the NGK glow plug they are identical to the genuine and are one of the same thing. I have had discussions with NGK canada and USA to see if they were willing to import them to North America but as this market is very limited they say it is not economically viable. I currently import them 100 at a time direct from the UK and retail them for $52 each.

Well, I am supplying Hyundai 11V glow plugs .
Hyundai 11V glow plugs have 'built-in resistor' (variable resistance versus engine temperature) to prevent overheating as Glen noted.
As far as I know,all NGK glow plugs that are identical to Mitsubishi OEM cannot be sold based on contract.
So any cheaper NGK GPs are just similar ones or copies.(one piece of Mitsubishi OEM glow plug costs $100 from shelf. )

I am not stating where they were purchased. The customer that came into our shop with starting issues told us that they were Hyundai glow plugs installed in his van and upon inspection they had all failed. I am also not stating that the NGK plugs are better than anyone else, just that they are tried and tested way of insuring good quality glow plugs. On both the UK and Australia forums the NGK CY55 glow plugs have been used for many years with very good feedback on reliabliity. This is a statement of experience only.

Mitsubishi OEM's last the longest at 10+ years
NGK CY55's a close 2nd
All others, Hyundai's included are a distant last with unknown and inconsistent longevity
This has been discussed, tested and proven on other forums long before Canada saw it's first Delica and this forum even existed. Rehashing it over and over is like reading the same book twice. It's still the same book.

All I know is from personal experience and that being I had the worst luck with the HKT PLugs and the two that failed before I replaced them were HKT plugs and the two that were rusty and old but still worked were OEM plugs. The hyundai are better then the HKT one IMO but now it seems that I have to cycle them 3 times to get a clean start. And everything else in the system is in good shape....now with summer coming up I'm not worried about it so much but come next winter I think I'll give the NGK plugs a go and see what happens.

Here is how 10-month old Hyundai glow plugs look like. Installed at CVI in October 2011, replaced by myself with NGK CY55 for the same price and no labor cost. Do your math.

He gave power to glow plugs continuously without self control due to some other reason.
so, could be a control system problem.
We had encountered a similar issue when we serviced newly arrived L400 before selling , we decided to part out.
