Ontario Delica Owners Beware

Post by surfhunter »

So we picked up a Delica in Ontario over the past few days and all was good until I called my insurance company to get insurance so I can get a safety and register it in my name.

Nope - its now policy that Allstate will NOT insure any RHD vehicles in Ontario - period. Even through Im 38, no traffic violations, no tickets, ever.

Ok - so we called a few of the insurance agents posted on this site as well as some other RHD sites. The agents assured me "no problem", we insure em all the time. 12 hours later - Nope, sorry, not going to happen. New policy effective this week, no more RHD insurance, this coming from two agents that deal with RHD clients, including companies selling these vehicles here.

Broker Time - 24 hours later, "we found an insurance company that will take you" One, thats it. A nice little place called "Facility". Thats the place that takes on the worst drivers out there, you know, drunks, multiple speeders, etc and with that coverage comes a pretty high price tag. 2100 a year. For a 93 Delica and a 38 years old driver with no tickets or claims, ever.

This is what happens when you dont look at ALL aspects of picking up something that it outside the norm.

ONTARIO SUCKS - ITS ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL. If its strange or not normal - BAN IT. Thats why I love BC.

Anyways - if your in Ontario or are planing on moving here be prepared to pay BIG to drive your beloved Delica. I know this is nothing new but at the time people were still getting good rates here and it was easy to get insurance. Everything has changed in regards to insurance and its not easy and its not cheap.

Sorry about the rant with this 2nd post but its something that people in Ontario need to know.

Hey Surf - sorry to hear that. That really sucks. Seems the country is getting pretty sour on RHDs - and I have 2 now and trying to change insurance companies here in AB as we speak.

So is this for full collision coverage that no one will insure? Or even just liability?

My present insurance company just said they'd no longer offer me collision on my RHDs (I've never had an accident or ticket), though I found Co-Operators insurance will do full coverage - get this - for cheaper than what I'm paying no for liability only?? Maybe give them a shout?

Sorry to hear about your insurance traumas. We have it pretty good here in Saskatchewan. Currently our L300 is fully insured by Sask. Government Insurance (SGI) for less than $50/month. Hopefully it remains sane here for many years to come.

I'm having the same problem. I've been in Ontario for a year now and have had insurance through Intact since I've been back.

Just last week I received a letter in the mail stating that they are no longer insuring RHD vehicles. Through another delica.ca member I was able to get a lead to another insurance company in my area. They told me it would be no problem and that they have multiple underwriters that would take RHD. The day after emailing me a quote he emailed me again saying that this company no longer insures RHD. I'm still waiting to hear back on whether or not he has found anything. I will post any info and contacts here if/when I find insurance.

Yup -Intact was the same company that dropped my collision on me.
Though they would still provide Liability coverage for RHDs - in AB anyhow.

Sorry to hear about your insurance woes. :-(
It seems that a trend is starting. They are not banning RHDs but not fully insuring them either. Liability insurance but not collision coverage = you smack it, you loose it. :-(
They tried to write off jfarsang's safari for a broken windshield. If there is no collision coverage, they might not even have to write you off.

On with the RHD fight!!

I will post the contact of the Broker once I return home later today. As mentioned though, its through Facility and its not cheap. $1875 for Liability and $2100 for full coverage with a $500 deductable. Not sure which to pick here due to fact that Im not sure how much they would pay out in case a total loss were to happen. It cant be simple can it. Im just hoping I wont have any issues getting a dam safety now since Im the new owner.

This is what happens when we live outside the box I suppose. Always a fight.

Broker Contact in Ontario = Josie @ 1 866 931 8413 extension 311.

I was told that all insurance companies except Facility are going to drop RHD insurance in the very near future here. Reason being, stats based on accidents & fraud with the majority being Skylines. She told me Facility will insure Skylines with the average being $4200 in the Toronto area. What a joke, one goes 200 km/h plus and one goes 100 km/h, on a good day.

Anyways - its nice to be driving my dream van finally, even though its in Onterrible,

I'll return West one day soon, where I belong.

So.... they are insuring Skylines but not Delicas? Or they are not insuring RHDs because of Skylines because of their engine power? If so, what about Ferraris, BMWs, Mercs, Aston Martins, ~ the list goes on. Or is it just that us punters can afford these used cars.... Is this not a double standard contrary to the Constitution?

Thanks for posting the contact information.

Falco.
