3L V6 Reliability

Post by Trinker »

Hey guys, I'm a long time L300 owner but considering changing my hardware to a V6 L400. I know you take a serious hit on fuel mileage but other than that what are people experience with the gas version? Any common woes or issues like the 4D56 or is it more reliable? Anything to watch for particularly when buying a V6 l300? Any info or personal experiences greatly appreciated, cheers - Trinker

3L V6 Reliability

That V6 was fitted to a huge number of vehicles, including thousands of Chryslers. It's pretty reliable. The common faults I can think of are hydraulic tappets seizing (regular tapping noise from under the valve covers, replacement hydraulic adjusters are cheap and easy to fit) and throttle bodies getting clogged up (idle speed unstable, fixed by cleaning the throttle body).

There may be other L400-specific issues, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. I'm sure others will chime in.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

3L V6 Reliability

Ive had my newly acquired 2002 V6 for the better part of a month now. Picked it up in Abbotsford and drove it home to Winnipeg. Ive done a few camping trips in that time as well. I slowed down to 100Km from 120Km on the Coquihalla, I didn't want to push it. On the flats or on the prairies it easily cruised at 120km keeping with the pace of traffic hovering around 3000rpm. From my reading the V6 is very reliable and the MPG is not much worse than the diesel but its early days for me still.

cheers
