The plastic is thin, brittle and the whole piece is quite fragile.
Here's an overview on how to remove it/replace it without destroying it.
This is for the base model with no gauge pod on the top, however the same thing applies.
Using a flat head thin screwdriver, pry upwards on the sides and front (facing the rear of the L400) as shown on the arrows. These are 4 metal clips that pop upwards.
Make sure you pull the tray upwards as there are two little L-shaped tabs on the rear (facing the front of the L400) in picture 3.
*For the gauge pod, using a flat head thin screwdriver, pry upwards on the sides of the semi dome on the rear (facing the front of the L400)
Remove the following screws :
*For the gauge pod, there are two phillips screws facing down on each side.
Push the cupholder to that it pops out. Once in the out position, remove the following screws:
Pull the entire cuphold cassette out. Careful as there is an L-shaped small tab at the end.
At this point, the whole console can be pulled out a few inches. There will be these 4 points (red arrows) keeping it from being fully removed from the dash.
First, disconnect the digital clock.
Then disconnect the 3 plugs. From L to R. Defrost, Hazard lights, ECS or blank plate.
Now the center console can be fully removed from the dash.
To install, repeat the steps above.
