The oil is always black, even shortly after a change, so I don't know what to look for.
Welcome to diesel engines... diesel oil is ALWAYS black, (seemingly the instant it touches the engine) that doesn't indicate a problem per-se, it's normal on diesels.

I am with Mardy on that on! Got some a while back and they last as long as the oil 5000 km. 8-) I like the Royal Purple oil (diesel). Then agian Mardy does not dig the synthetic.

Which store are you getting the Luber-finer filters from? I found a decent deal on FRAM PH6355 filters online at http://www.rockauto.com. They work out to be approx. $18 US each if you order 10 (including shipping), anything less than than that and the price creeps up until it hits $36 for one. The price per unit doesn't seem to fall after the 10 unit mark, so I think that's what I'll order, unless someone has a better suggestion :M

Ok - just picked up the KN equivalent from Lordco today for $15+tax.
According to previous owner, this is good filter with anti back flow check valve meaning good oil flow at startup.
Part number is K&N HP-3001. Lordco showed retail price on my invoice as $19.99 but discounted to basically $15 + tax.
I used Fram previously up to now - but price is outrageous in my opinion.
Anyone have any reason why this filter is not a good choice?
I certainly like the price - and all indications are this is good quality filter.

I figured it was too good to be true - otherwise everyone would be using this one and avoiding the price of the Fram filter.
Tks for the input.

Hi all, Just get the proper part ! No worries.

We keep a spare filter in our "weekend stuff " box just in case. Box says Mitsubishi Part MZ690071 for 4D56 & 4D65.

John of Rocky Mountain Imports in Vancouver, ships to anywhere. We e-chatted today about parts stuff.

http://www.rockymountainimports.net (note the .net) is website with little boxes to fill in for what you want. Phone 604-531-6017

John plans to make it to this Friday's Lower Mainland Show & Tell, so let him know what you want in advance.

His wife is expecting their 2nd baby soon. How cool to name the baby " Delica " -- won't be many others in school with the same name-- then we could use baby for delicanada mascot.

Cheers, Christine of the TardisDeli.

It looks like the filters from Rocky Mountain Imports are $35 - $42 (plus shipping). Not any cheaper than my local oil change place or Lordco. Any reason you would recommend these filters over what I can get locally? Max Overdrive has filters listed for $20 on their site, or in a recent post for $12 here.

Rocky Mountain Imports sells the Micro Filter. Max Overdrive is showing the Advantage in your link. The wholesale cost of the Micro is apparently about $8.00 more. Because the Micro is a genuine JDM part it has to be shipped from Japan and I suspect that probably adds to the price as well. Not sure where the "Clear Advantage" filters are made. Would be interesting if it were possible to compare the filtration characteristics between them.

Adam, was that you we met last year in the Naniamo Canadian Tire parking lot in the evening when you were buying parts for your WVO project?

For oil changes, I'm lazy so I go to mr.minutelube in north van, as they always have the filter ($45!) which saves me finding it myself, and do all the grease points and all the fluids down below (xcase, diffs, etc), check tire psi, coolant test, battery, window wash, airfilter, any bulbs or fuses needed, etc, and a cup of coffee. They like delicas and see quite a few, I've gone down below and chatted with them about various mechanical parts/ideas/problems and they are good. I think it comes to just over $100 with the filter charge and upgrade to premium oil. I run quaker state synthetic blend "4x4" 15w-40.

Hard to argue with spending a few bucks on that every 5000km.. versus crawling underneath on the wet cold ground, getting covered in dirt and oil and grease, finding somewhere to dispose the old oil, and so forth.

If I ever end up near somewhere with cheaper filters I'll buy a half dozen or something to save some coins.

Yeah, we just forked over another $95 to Great CDN Oil change, so I'm thinking of doing this myself from now on. I did find an eBay seller in the US that has the WIX filters for $18 each, but I'm not sure what S&H and duty charges would do to that so I'm very tempted to use the MaxOverdrive Advantage filters, just a bit concerned about the quality.

That sounds very familiar. I think I ran to CDN Tire while my son was at karate and then was a tad late picking him and my wife up :-). CDN tire always makes me late.

Yeah, Adam, that was it. I often wondered if that was you in the forum. At the time we were still waiting for the Delica to arrive and it was nice of you to take the time to show me your unit, which was the first one I actually ever heard running. We'll be passing through there again in a couple of weeks in the Delica if I manage to get my TBelt, B-Belt, and waterpump changed this weekend, will watch for you on the road. Oops, I forgot I guess I better get new rubber as well, I understand they are pretty strict on the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island and target Delicas on a regular basis.

I used the Micro filter and a case of oil from Costco last change. Given it cost probably close to $70.00 doing it myself (you do have 5.5 litres of oil left over from the case however) that Mr. Minitlube doesn't sound like such a bad deal.

I tried "mr lube" once in the Delica... never again! they eventually did the oil change, but it was far more hassle then it was worth... I even supplied the filter and they still didn't want anything to do with it because they couldn't find the filter in their computer... and they weren't willing to touch any other fluid other than the oil for fear of getting the "wrong type"...
all in all it was not a good experience and it was pretty clear that they didn't want my business...

I still don't do my own oil changes though (I know it's not that hard, I just hate doing them) but I've found a garage now that seems to actually ENJOY working on the vehicle...
