Harrisson Lake West - July 1-3

Post by nxski »

Hi, sorry, this isn't really an open trip (My friends want to just have a small group) but I was wondering if any other Delica's are planning to be up there next weekend? It would be pretty neat to run into a fellow owner while touring around. We'll be approaching from the North and coming down. We'll also me doing a photo op on the beach by the training grounds under the First Narrows Bridge Friday morning.

Is the huge landslide at around km 70 already gone?

HI Nick, we'll be at N'Kwala Forestry site, 20 minutes west of Merrit. Take photos of the harrison please, especially around 70kk as felix mentions, the WHOLE hillside had collapsed. christine.

Have you done the entire West side loop lately? I remember there were a couple slides over the last year, but I couldn't find any information whether the huge slide at km 70 is fixed or not.

I heard about the washout a while ago but rumpus has it it's been cleared up. I'll let you all know what the situation is when I get back and I'll definitely take lots of pictures.

Does anyone have reccomendations for nice secluded areas along the road or just off of it? I'd like to find a nice free or cheap place to camp and some nice little hotsprings (I've seen pictures in other threads) that wouldn't be very crowded.
Thanks

Personally, I avoid that area like the plague anytime theres a long weekend.. especially if you're a young family. That area fills up with booze swilling rednecks and shit often hits the fan. And seeing that many rednecks sometimes don't appreciate delica's/rhd's/imports/freethinkers I wouldn't leave my crap unattended. Expect loud music all night, drunken yelling, and the token 3am lets rev the piss out of our quads and dirtbikes.. I would camp as far north west from Harrison as I could and just drive through at the end. 20 mile bay is a gong show, hale creek can be nice if a decent group gets down there, but again, gong show.

Depends what you're looking for, maybe to you thats a great time!

I expected that to an extent. I'm used to camping like that unfortunately so it doesn't bother me too much. How long does it take to drive the road? My friends are worried about not making it home until really late. have you had any experience with chipmunk creek? Any idea how it compares in terms of rowdyness?

On normal weekends, the pay site is always good for families and they usually sell some wood but on long weekends it's a gongshow. Its tough to try and get a group of people to "quiet down" after 11pm. Foley is okay for camping if you hike down to the good spot across.

Like Pajerry said, the whole strip can get pretty redneckish with shotguns going off at night to crazy parties, etc... It's pretty much luck of the draw who you get beside you or down the road.

You might be used to that type of camping but are your friends ? It's not pleasant unless you're into that style.

And the slide is all but gone. I drove it last month on my way back from Pemberton.

Yes, my friends are also used to that kind of camping and we'll probably be staying up until 4am as well (just not making a ton of noise). :-D

Unfortunately I have the pleasure of knowing quite a few of the redneck types. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely keep them in mind.

Ideas on how long the trip should take in terms of driving time?

Watch out for mud slide:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-c ... story.html

"The cause of Wednesday's slide is still unknown, but Bauman said it may be linked to old logging roads, many of which weren't well built and were never decommissioned properly.

"It's time we should go back to those old logging roads and have a second look [and] make sure they are not the cause of some of these events," said Bauman.

He said there was a provincial government program in place in the 1990s to assess and stabilize the roads, but it ran out of money."
