hi,
i'm a new owner.
I noticed my delica shakes (the whole thing ie rattling doors etc..) when I start it cold. the idle speed is low 500rpm maybe lower. once the van is warm it idles around 700 and doesn't shake. does anyone know whats going on?

All the Diesel trucks i have driven over the years idle rough when started cold..
but of course old and cracked rubber motor and tranny mounts will also compound the problem.
but there is other things too. just read the beginning of the thread. same problem already discussed..

but once it warms up everything is good.. so sounds like regular diesel behavior to me.

Agreed with above post... When cold, I use the hand throttle to bring the revs around 1000rpm for probably 20-30 sec to avoid the shaking. By that time I just release the hand throttle and the shaking is almost gone. Anyone sees issues with this?

You may, in the interm , while trying to deduce which mounts/bolts/shims/nuts are loose, try doing what the countrymen of the designers do when stopped - shift to neutral. You'll find that the shaking will almost, if completely stop. Just remember to shift back to drive after the light changes. I'd spent some time in Japan and almost all drivers will do this as SOP(standard operating procedure). I noticed that my drives window stops rattling if I do this. I've also crawled underneath to see if something was askew. I can now hear my stereo in stop and go traffic,

It only rattles after a cold start, when it idleslow 500rpm. Once it warms the it idles fine 750rpm. I had a similar promblem with my landcruiser turned out to be a little diaphram.

does anyone have a shop manual for the delica?

Agree with Sten - I go to Japan 2x per year on business, and have noted that even many cab drivers on their auto petrol cabs will shift into neutral at red lights. Always found this odd considering the gassers don't vibrate much compared to the diesels, but as in true Japanese form, I'm sure they are trying to give the most pleasant ride possible to their guest! I do this intermittently myself as well.....

Thought I'd revive this one - but different reason.
Had my IP rebuilt by Mardy back in November. Some odd behaviour noted shortly after - firstly, had to crank over a few extra times after the glow cycle to get her started compared to pre-rebuild, and there was this slightly rougher idle when warm (and the usual rough idle when cold - slight improvement when warm, but not as good as pre rebuild). After a few weeks, the starting returned to the original - ie, fired right up after glow cycle. I guess a few things had to "work in" on the new IP.

Recent development - and the reason for the post - is that the idle is now quite good shortly after warm up. Smooth at stop lights and such. But, after a prolonged period of driving - and engine is fully warm - say 30 minutes driving - the idle can be very rough when coming to a stop. Not always this way - but becoming quite common after a good run, and can be very rough at times. I've managed thus far by kicking into neutral, but will likely have CVI take a peek next time I'm in for a service.

It's quite the opposite of what I'd expect....smoother at the beginning - getting rough only after driving for some time.

Mine is doing the same thing as jrman. Although mine has a very rough start. Just cranking it over is super rough with a couple clunks then it fires up, idles fine not very rough. But after driving it for about 30 minutes or so and I come to a stop it shakes like crazy. I have noticed though that my idle seems to have a mind of it's own. I set it 700rpm it's good for a week or two then it starts to climb. I thought it had something to do with some incorrect wiring for my DRL since the idle would always jump about 250rpm after turning the lights off. But once I adjusted the idle it stoppped doing that. Not sure whats going on with it...
