My friend wants to buy a Deli but needs to know if the towing capacities are different for the automatic versus the manual transmission. He wants to tow a ski boat which weighs 700lbs for the trailer and 2000lbs for the boat so together the weight to be towed is 2700lbs. GVW is gross vehicle weight which is boat, trailer, and vehicle together what is this towing capactiy of 3500lbs refer to for sure. Does anyone do any serious towing?

I can't confirm the overall Delica's towing capacity beyond the 3500lbs I have read on other forums, but with a low horsepower diesel you can't except to maintain good highway speeds towing that much weight.

I pull my 17 Aluminum boat on the highway, but it's light, under 1800 lbs loaded with gear, motor, and beer. 120 klicks' no problem. Our 18' travel trailer weighs over 3000 lbs loaded up and I'll keep to pulling to that around town only; but I have to add that the Delica seems a more capable towing vehicle then our Astro van. The Astro van had a max cap. of 5500 lbs, but the brakes and suspension of the Delica seems much more able for towing. The Deli can get 50 km/h up a hill at 3000 rpm pulling our travel trailer, baring a good headwind. You can pull 3000 lbs with a Deli, just give your self an hour or two to get it up to 80 km/h.

Good to know, 'cause I'm wondering how a Delica would do with 3 guys, a bunch of camping gear, & 3 track bikes on a road trip from Victoria to California!

well it was cruising at 100-120 on the flats and downhill... the uphills were cruising at 70-90...

On a hiking trip last weekend we got 6 people, 2 dogs, camping gear for all, internal load, no problem! The van was on fire, 90 km up some decent hills! It does enjoy the cooler weather though. I think the turbo with no intercooler benefits from cold air.

Wow!!! Thanks for the posts & the link folks, that IS pretty impressive indeed. Very good point made on the fact that the Turbo is air cooled vrs. intercooled. I haven't surfed long enough to find if there is a retro-fit modification out there to intercool the Delica turbo [swapping out the stocker for a intercooled turbo]. Looks like a internet hunting task for me...

I know you allready have a trans cooler with your autotrans, But I Hightly recomend if your going to be going to California/anywhere with mountains and hot weather that you put in an aditional trans cooler, Its only about $50 but its cheaper than trying to source a trans for your delica in the States. I only say this if your towing a trailer.
