I like most of the concept. I would change a few things but only because my needs are slightly different.
I think we could do something like that on an l300 easy enough.
I would add an awning over the whole back area for those of us in the pacific northwest !!

I've got the same problem - will post some pics of what I've been monkeying around with lately.
I welded on a spare tire hanger from Canadian Tire onto my Thule bike rack (good for 300Lbs) - but now I've hidden the plate - I know I'm going to get caught soon enough. I was thinking to put the plate neatly mounted where it can be seen - but it still won't be "illuminated" as required by law - but at least I'll be 50% the way to legal I guess.
Anyway pics to come mid week when back to Van.

Yes, that's what I'm going to have to do eventually - move the license plate over to the left side of the tailgate and install a license plate light. For now, I'm just putting the rack on and carrying the spare when leaving the city. License has been obstructed every time I've carried bikes on the back - but figure I better be safe and make sure I'm legal. I wouldn't do any major 4x4ing with this setup - but she'll do for carrying that extra gear on camping trips / road trips etc.

Bike rack is Thule - not sure model number - she is about 10 yrs old though - fixed arms rated to 300 lbs. Class II from E&H rated to 300 as well I believe, maybe 400? Anyway - won't be going over 300 any time soon I believe. Box is King Kong $99 from Romulan Tire rated to 500 lbs. I was looking at receiver style racks and just couldn't part with the fundage. I mounted the box onto the arms of the bike rack with the same kit commonly used on the rooftop clamshell cargo carriers - had one for my wife van so didn't need to purchase this - but I think they are about $25. I welded a spare tire carrier originally intended for holding spare tire to garage wall. I don't trust my welding skills so added the ratcheted tie down for "insurance".

Bit of a poor mans cargo carrier - but will meet my needs for now - would like to go to a swing out tire carrier when my delica grows up!!!

Oh - and this rack does have a removable pin to allow it to fold down so I can open he tailgate...works fine when the box is empty. Not so good when the box is full!!!!!!
