why are my guages kicking in and out?

Hey!
So my tach, my temp gauge and my fuel gauge have been acting up lately. At first they just acted up and now they seem to be stuck flat. I'm sure its just a bad connection or ground seen as how I just got it and it sat for a while.
Anyways if anyone knows what the fix might be if they have had this problem. Please drop me a line. Thanks a bunch.
Matt

Matt,

Check the fuse box first off. If thats not the problem, then I'm sure Jay is salivating over an electrical issue. he would probably have a look at it for you on Friday night. ( if its not a fuse - make sure yu top up with fuel; before departing Mission) :-)

Hey gregg
Thanks again for the ideas. I thought about the fuse. Don't think it is because it went in and out but ill check after work today to be sure. Haha and ya ill be sure to watch my fuel by using my odometer. Anyways ya that would be great if jay can have a look if that's his specialty. :)

Anyways thanks again and look forward to meeting all you guys tomorrow

Regards,
Matt

Hey Matt, grab Jay of The TardisDeli when he gets there at 6pm and he will enjoy the electrical challenge ... tempt him with a bottle of pepsi (not c***) and some fast food ie Churchs Chicken.

Yes, make sure you have fuel (aahhh Golf Cart always thinking ahead, thanks).

I have not heard of anyone having issues with temp and fuel guages, except if they actually have a problem with overheating or lack of fuel. Seems unusual that 2 things would fail at the same time, So will need a bit of sleuthing on your vehicle.

My first thought, I am wondering if you have alternator issues. How to check is to watch your idiot lights (the little icons along the bottom of your fuel guage, especially in the dark when you can see them better) as you drive along the road, do the little icons glow faintly while driving or possibly fade on/off. You shouldnt see any idiot lights while driving, but they should all glow brightly and STEADILY just before you start the engine, while you have your ignition key in the glow plug ON position.

Do you have any other little symptoms, just write them down as you think of them, becuz they might be a clue. Has your dash board been altered in any way recently, ie new stereo, new headlight wires, new horn, anything electrical somewhere been altered (the headlights have been known to get bad ground on the contacts just behind the headlights) or any other place that you might have a loose wire touching the frame (ie do all your power doors/windows/fog lights etc work or has one recently started having issues).

See you tomorrow at IKEA Coquitlam. Cheers, christine.

I also have this problem. But it only happens on cold mornings so far. In the afternoon, when I start it after work is over the guages always seem to work. Strange, probably just a loose connection somewhere that's affected by humidity or something??? Let me know what you find out. Thanks!

Hey again
Thanks christine! Ill be sure to bring something tempting for jay. :) haha
I just had to put new lights in for inspection and all and we did have to wire my DRL"s and side markers through the steering coloumn. That is probably where the problem lies - a bad ground in there somewhere.
The latest post from
"penner" is exactly the same problem as I'm having - it only happens in the cold mornings - later after work its no problem at all??? Weird eh?

Anyways thx for the ideas and ill see you tomoro. :D

Take care,
Matt

P.s. Penner - ill keep you posted on what we find out. Funny that we are having the exact same prob. Its gotta be a humidity affected wiring issuse ( as you said ) in the steering coloum with the headlights or something. Anyways - ill let you know. Take er easy

I had the same issue about 2 months ago after some heavy driving in the bush. It would seem that all the bumping around giggled the connections loose. I ended up taking the instrument cluster completely out, unplugging everything and then reinstalling it. It work fine after that with only one instance where the tac failed about a month later... but that was quickly solved (and permanently it would seem) by giving the top of the dash, above the cluster, a very firm open handed slap.

Here's the link to my confusion...

Check three post down for the instructions to pull the cluster. It's not a Jay *tm solution, but it worked for me.

Thank you very much to all. Gotta love this website for helping a guy out! I removed my instrument cluster last night, unplugged and replugged everything i could get my chubby digits on. Tach worked fine this morning! Yeah! The high beam indicator didn't go on the first time but the open handed slap seamed to fix that.
Also I found the dreaded blue tape on the back of the instrument cluster I had been reading about. I don't think mine could have been tampered with since I have a wide range of maintenance records from Japan and all service dates and milage numbers seam to add up along the way. I think the blue tape is nothing to worry about.
Thanks again!
