Here's how to fix a stuck horn

I was woken up at 2:35 in the morning last night to some jackass's horn blaring away.....wait a second, that's my horn!

Easy fix thanks to recommendations from this site.

Steps to fix:

Remove small screw from under the steering wheel (really obvious as it's the only one there)

Gently pry off the horn assembly from the steering wheel. You want to be fairly gentle as there's an electrical connection from the assembly to the wheel, so you don't want to rip the thing off and damage the male/female connection under there.

You can see one end of the little connecto in this photo

The phantom horn occurs after the thin foam which is sandwiched between 2 metal plates degrades and allows the metal to contact each other. Happened to me last night I guess cause it was getting cold and the metal/plastic/foam shrank a little. THough the horn has always been super sensitive.

Here you see the plates and the foam

So the fix is thanks to Mardy I think? Just use 2 plastic coffee stir sticks and cut them to fit between the two metal pieces where the foam is. This separates the plates enough so they don't touch but still allows you to compress the horn so it still works.

THanks Mardy, no more running out into the alley in my gitch in the middle of the night - my neighbours thank you. :o

haha, when that i looked at the date of this post... we had the same happening a week before you. disconnected the whole thing, and lived happily everafter without horn. now that i see this easy solution, though, i might give it a try. thanks!

Too Funny. Went for a drive today and had to use the horn twice, thanks to it being the last Saturday before Christmas.
Note: Avoid any malls or grocery stores!
Got home and a few hours later then I hear some horn blaring away for a few minutes..then I thought..shit sounds like the
Deli? I ran down to the street to hear the Deli screaming away. After a few panic moments I was able to bend the horn up and remove the
connection. Bent the screw but managed to stop the horn before the neighbors had me arrested.

Thanks to this site I will fix it up tomorrow..maybe in a parking lot far far away from my house .

Hopefully stir sticks will save the day.

Three years later... I replaced the old and decaying foam with new foam. Now I actually have to depress the horn pad to make it work instead of it working automatically as a road bump indicator.

This fix is genius! I recently went through the same thing except it happened when I was crossing the Montana/Alberta border. The border guard wasn't too happy with me lol.

My horn has been randomly going off while hitting bumps and a few times it stayed on for 5 seconds or so.
Instead of being woken up in the middle of the night I thought I would preemptively fix it.

This was the easiest thing I've ever done on the delica. Literally took no more than 6-7 mins. I didn't have stir sticks so I just used a drinking straw and cut it to fit.

Thanks for the original post!
