9 out of 10 of them come over from Japan with cracked center consoles.

The plastic is thin, brittle and the whole piece is quite fragile.

Here's an overview on how to remove it/replace it without destroying it.

This is for the base model with no gauge pod on the top, however the same thing applies.

Using a flat head thin screwdriver, pry upwards on the sides and front (facing the rear of the L400) as shown on the arrows. These are 4 metal clips that pop upwards.

Make sure you pull the tray upwards as there are two little L-shaped tabs on the rear (facing the front of the L400) in picture 3.

Remove the following screws :

Push the cupholder to that it pops out. Once in the out position, remove the following screws:

Pull the entire cuphold cassette out. Careful as there is an L-shaped small tab at the end.

At this point, the whole console can be pulled out a few inches. There will be these 4 points (red arrows) keeping it from being fully removed from the dash.

First, disconnect the digital clock.

Then disconnect the 3 plugs. From L to R. Defrost, Hazard lights, ECS or blank plate.

Now the center console can be fully removed from the dash.

To install, repeat the steps above.

missing link?

removal is relatively straight forward, start by removing the gauge pod (back of pod snaps off, then screws are visible)
then undo the 2 screws that hold the cup-holder tray in, then the whole centre console plastic piece comes right off, there are plugs on the back of it for the 3 switches (rear defrost, hazard, ecs) as well as the clock.

It's there. Just took a while to upload from my phone (pics). I was working on it. Be patient.

It's not that straightforward as I've spoken with 7 people who managed to break their consoles which is why I posted this.

It's also very fragile and if you don't do it right the 1st time, it can crack easily.

It wasn't there when I submitted the reply, which is why I commented. Had it taken a while to submit it the first time I never would have known.

I think people break it because it's fragile, not because it's complicated. (or they make it more complicated than it is by trying to pry at it instead of trying to find the screws)

Timely. During the recent freezing spell, I bumped my knee into the coffeecup holder, which was open at the time. Somehow, both of the cup support platforms (which prevent the cups from falling through) just cracked off entirely. This console IS brittle!
