HELP!!! OIL EVERYWHERE!!

Hi all,
Loving my van but suddenly I've been leaking oil for about a week now, gradually more and more.... I finally got under it and looked in the engine compartment.... oil splattered all over the place.

Head gasket? Turbo? I don't even know how to tell. but there's definately lots of oil all over the block from the head down.... also oil splattered as far as on my battery and coolant container
Has anybody ever had this problem? How much will a new head gasket job cost and who should I get to do it? (not capable myself) OR could it be something to do with the turbo?
Does anybody know anybody near Whistler or Squamish who I can take the van to??? Or if not maybe someone in Vancouver???
thanks.... bummed out.

I had that happen with my old westFAILia .. my oil filter has backed off just a little bit, I would start there make sure its on tight, then if its not that then crawl under and look up with a flashlight and check to see if your oil line is loose off your turbo, your valve cover might be a bit loose? hope that helps

Hi Straightline
Looks like I am in the same boat as you are on this problem. Looked under my Delica yesterday and had oil all over. I went into Newport Auto in Squamish today to see if the mechanics there have worked on Deli's before and he says he has, so I am bringing mine in next week for him to take a look. Going to have to try wetcoastnewbie's ideas hopefully its that easy to fix!!

Could it be a front seal? Mine leaks a tiny bit... it looks like a nightmare of oil underneath, but i lose so little oil its not a concern. Anyhow, mine looks like it is just a front seal. I'll get it changed when I can afford the "downtime" to wait for a sourced part (everything takes time up here). But it probably just shrank from years of sitting.
Good luck. Apparantly these engines are indestructable when it comes to heads....so no concerns there.

so I sprayed down the engine with a degreaser ... powerwashed everything afterward... cleaned 'er right up... threw some cardboard underneath... first thing in the morning I should be able to figure out where the oil's coming from. I'll let you know when I locate the leak... wish me luck!

ummm... I beg to differ as I've already had to deal with that one... they aren't all that bad, but the head isn't what it is on some other diesel vehicles...

But wasn't yours under some extreme circumstances that most people wouldn't ever even have their engine go through? Or is that just a case of bad recollection?

It was reasonably "extreme" circumstances (overheating due to a clogged radiator) though I have talked to others who have been through a cracked head as well, and in their cases it's not so obvious what caused it, The Delica has a better reputation on the head than the competitor (toyota townace) but it's not "bullet proof" and as such reasonable care should be taken with it. Some importers recommend a high flow exhaust and a pyro-meter on all Delicas they bring in for this reason, some also exclude the head from their warranty...

your , right green1, the problem is that if you dont check the radiator if this is clog then the tendency is to overheat the engine,
as far as i know this mitsubishi engine is the best head than any toyota diesel engine , back home in the phils, toyota landcruiser hdj81 6 cylinder & hi-lux surf 2.4 liter, also townace 2 liter. do overheat in a 2or 3 hrs hrs of traffic with full aircon running. but this delica seems to have better cooling system as long as you looks after this engine, it last longer, try to make your antifreeze to 70-30 max & you wont have any problem also change the thermosthat if you think is bad. i never have any problem of overheating since then with this delica its very good.
i wont replace it with any toyota diesel since i know this mitsubishi engine since i was i kid. its way much better.
cheers to everybody
