So.....everyone is swearing by these BD28 filters for the L300. Figured I'd give it a try. Problem is....it leaks. I spun it on (no xthread) and hand tightened. The filter instructions say 3/4 of a turn with the filter wrench to seat it....seems a bit excessive, but okay, so I give it an extra 3/4 turn. And the result is leakage (oh my heart.....).

So I remove it and install the second one that I bought for the next oil change. This time only giving it 1/4 turn. Hmmmm.....same problem.....

When I've used Fram PH6355's in the past I've never had a leak. I'm not too sure what's going on here. It's not leaking more than a drip, but that's too much for my tastes. Looking at the mating surface when I was installing the second one it visually looks like the gasket is too big. I wish I would have compared the Fram that came off, I normally do, but I didn't like hanging in the Canadian Tire parking lot I was in any more than I had to.... ;0)

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm travelling down to Oregon tomorrow, so I'll first try tightening a bit more, then I'm going to go to Lordco and get a PH6355 and replace it. This oil change is getting expensive!

I went through 6 of them and never had any problems.

when you took off the old filter, did the gasket stick onto the block, or did it come off with the old filter?
using 2 gaskets is a bad thing.
this is usually the #1 reason why oil filters leak.

just look at your original filter to see if the gasket is there. if it isn't then it's probably stuck on the engine block.

Sideways mounted filters are messy to install. Are you sure its leaking?

I seemed to have this problem the first time I installed a BD28. So I tried another. In the end, properly pre-filling the filter, lubing up the gasket, and wiping up (quite a lot) after installation... did the trick. No leak.

On my second set of 6packs of the baldwin.
Never had a problem.

Do check for a remaining seal as was previously suggested or
simply get a new one. Somethings up with that.

two gaskets very likely (did it once and pumped 3L of new oil all over the drive).

Also, make sure the threads are good on the motor. Over tightening can strip them out.

In the end I fixed it by tightening the shit out of the filter. Literally, I can't get it any tighter and I'm using a strap wrench style filter wrench. I'll have to inspect the threads on the next filter change, could be some rust or something. But no more leaks at least.

Apparently some filter manufacturers have been using rubber gaskets from China - the rubber is inferior and too hard. This would explain the poor seal - keep an eye out for it.

I as well have installed a dozen or two of the Baldwin BD28 filter by hand and have never had a problem. Pre lube filter and rubber seal to ensure no leaks. Good luck?

I noticed the last Baldwin fuel filter I got is made in China. Maybe you got the one of the first batch of oil filters made in China!!!
