I guess it's because of the pivot point up on the roof rack you don't want to have the weight all the way down. Otherwise you would need to lift a lot more weight and use bigger struts.

Just read a few times on other forums that people running into problems with the clear hoses as they are rate for around +65°C max. If the temperatures rises the rubber gets pretty soft and they might slip off the barbs even with hose clamps.
