Weird Stalling Issue - Any Help?
Hi all,
Please see this video for a demonstration
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kQSzbK9 ... ture=g-upl
Basically what's happening is I start up my Pajero and on the first start, it starts right up instantly.
I have a 1996 2.8 L Diesel 4M40 engine version.
So, first start it starts up instantly, then the engine will stall out in a slow way. The throttle response starts to go then the revs drop out. Sometimes this happens within 20 seconds, sometimes maybe after a minute or 2.
SOMETIMES if I rev the engine up it can help prevent it from happening, but I don't like to do that upon immediately starting the engine when it's cold because it's not good for the engine to do that.
I've even had it die out on me when I'm going 90+ Km/h on the highway. The throttle response goes away then the revs die out slowly then it stalls out.
Usually once it dies out once, it doesn't do it again, which is strange. Also, when I go to start up the engine after it's died out, it has to crank over several times before it will start up, as seen in the video.
Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Sounds like your Injection Pump seal is going.

If you have not changed your fuel filter in a while this could cause similar problems, good to rule it out.

X2. Air getting into the fuel system somehow.Mr. Flibble wrote:Sounds like your Injection Pump seal is going.
Check all the hose/tube fittings for leaks (cuz its cheaper and simpler) but if that all looks fine I'd think IP seal.
PS: That's a great video, so pls be sure to update the thread once you solve the problem. Then we'll have a "Here's an example of problem XXX, and here's what it looks/sounds like"
jfarsang posted an excellent video awhile ago outlining the sound the 4M40 timing chain makes when it is nearing replacement time:

A collection of videos like these would make a great addition to the manuals/downloads section IMHO.

Re: Weird Stalling Issue - Any Help?
I'm not really a mechanic type. I don't know a lot about working on engines and stuff, just basics.
Is it easy to find the hoses and stuff you're telling me about? I'm assuming check hoses around the intake, and hoses going from the fuel tank up to the engine and around the engine?
How do I check the hoses and stuff for leaks?
Would it be easier to just take my truck to a shop, and say "I think there may be an issue with the fuel lines/fittings and here is an example of what my problem is" show them the video, and have them diagnose it? that's probably the more....expensive option I guess eh haha.

Just organize a Delica Meet in your yard (or a neighbours yard, whover has more tools), invite all the Manitoba delica owners (send them PM private messages as well), offer a case of brewski to first person who solves it. There are a couple of very good owners with great diagnostic skills there. They can also tell you which repair shops they have trained to work on Delica's.
You've had replies from several trusted Delica owners who figure it is the IP Injection Pump. This is the heart of your delica. Do NOT let an inexperienced mechanic touch it. Worst case, get a trusted shop here in BC to send you a rebuilt one, some resources are: CVIautos in Richmond, Glen at Coombs Country Autos in Coombs, John at Rocky Mountain Imports in Victoria.
Good Luck, christine.

Re: Weird Stalling Issue - Any Help?
Just sent a PM with contact info for a good mechanic in your town. I echo what the others have said, probably IP seal, but start with the easy stuff.(fuel filter and lines) I have a seal and o-rings on hand if you need, I'll also be heading into Winnipeg on Monday the 14th, If you haven't got it figured out by then, I could maybe detour your way on my way home that afternoon and take a look, or bring you a seal if you need.

Re: Weird Stalling Issue - Any Help?
Well, I'm far from being knowledgable with this stuff but I can possibly provide a clue:
I ran my L400 through an automatic "touchless" car wash with engine running. Afterwards, while idling out I experienced the same phenomenon as you; it died in the same way and didn't want to start. I have a K&N Apollo air box so it's a bit easier for water to make its way into engine but basically, that's what happened. The engine was left running while the machinery blasted water/soap all over from many angles and some got into the air intake under right fender. It took some patience to re-start & then nursing of the idle to finally keep it going but was fine after about three minutes.
So what I'm saying is that it seems possible to me, given the symptoms in video, that coolant is getting into the air stream via a leaky gasket or wherever.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Interesting - I'd not thought of that.Drumster wrote:Well, I'm far from being knowledgable with this stuff but I can possibly provide a clue:

If water is getting into the engine, you'll see steam coming out the exhaust as it is dying (which should fade away once released as opposed to white unburned diesel which won't dissipate in the air).
OP are you seeing anything like that out the tailpipe when it is stalling out?

Re: Weird Stalling Issue - Any Help?
Usually, when you get water in a diesel it destroys the engine because of the higher compression.
Normally it would hydro lock unless you only got in a small amount relative to the airflow.

Re: Weird Stalling Issue - Any Help?
I believe it only hydrolocks if you get so much in that it would more than fill the cylinder completely at TDC, so when the compression stroke comes up, it cracks the head/block.
I'm thinking more of video clips I've seen where trucks are fording streams, and upon a splashy entry, sometimes you see a puff of steam out the exhaust. I think that's the engine ingesting some spray and firing it out.
That's more of what I'd expect if some coolant was oozing around a gasket.
Along those lines - OP, is your coolant level in your expansion bottle gradually dropping over time?

Re: Weird Stalling Issue - Any Help?
SORRY GUYS
Thank you so much for your replies, I've just been stupid busy with work that I haven't been able to work on this AT ALL.
I'm getting back at it now because I kind of want to sell my Toyota Yaris and just use my Pajero full time as I like it better :)
But I need to make sure it's running 100% which means getting the Alternator rebuilt (only pumping out 13V when it should be closer to 14V - I tested with volt meter, and the electric windows will CRAWL up unless I give it some throttle)
While I'm doing that I will see what I can find out about these seals and stuff. This Fuel Injection thing you're talking about. Where exactly is that? I have a feeling I should be orders a Pajero repair manual from Japanoid (Vancouver) or something like that haha.
Thanks

Manitoba Deli is in your neck of the woods.
He is a diesel mechanic and owns both the L300 & L400 so he is likely familiar with your engine.
Maybe if you contact him he can help you out?

Re: Weird Stalling Issue - Any Help?
I have spoken with Manitoba Deli and he hooked me up with a relative of his who lives/works closer to me.
I ordered a Front Fuel Injection Pump Seal from a shop I know of and had his relative do the work for me. I'm now stall-free!!!
So I guess anyone experiencing a similar issue to this, it would be a good place to start. I spoke with the shop who I ordered the seal from and they said it is a very common problem with the 4M40 engine, they see it a lot.
