K&N Apollo air filter

Post by Drumster »

I installed this some time ago in order to make room for an Amsoil Dual Bypass Oil Filter system and it's been great in that regard.

Recently I removed the K&N in order to look at the turbo and different things in preparation for installing Propane Injection kit. I'm really glad I did that because what I discovered was that the length of K&N Aluminum "accordion" ducting between filter and air inlet had been vibrated and pulsed nearly to death and there was all kinds of aluminum bits and shards gumming up the filter. The ducting itself had worn right through and air was being drawn in from the engine compartment. I'll post pics of the damaged ducting later.

The space from Apollo to opening in fender (to outside) had previously been about 14" long. What I've done now is, after repositioning the Apollo, I returned the original Delica air duct that went from fender opening to stock air box. With stock box in place this duct had been held in position by having the stock box itself press firmly against it - which couldn't happen with the K&N in use. However, I used some wire to hold down the duct using two bolts located close to opening. It's really firm now. As mentioned, I'll get some pics cuz I'm sure that won't make much sense without them. So now the Apollo is connected to stock rigid plastic duct, with only about 3 inches of the thin K&N Aluminum ducting between.

Of course before putting things back together I thoroughly cleaned, dried & re-oiled the filter. I also noticed a fair bit of fine dust inside the silicone intake ducting between filter & turbo. So although the dangerous chips and chunks of Aluminum were kept out, it looks like quite a bit of dust has been getting past the Apollo.

The K&N Apollo is, IMO, good for freeing up space and letting more air in to the engine but it does not do as thorough a job of filtering as I'd like. I'm not too impressed with that aspect so I think I'll buy one of these to fortify it...

Perforated K&N aluminum flex ducting: photo update...

And here's how I wired in the stock pre-filter duct. Looks a bit mickey mouse maybe but is working fine...

The K&N flex duct is the exact right for the OD of the stock duct except the duct is slightly oval. Gently pinch the flex duct & work it over the end of the oval stock piece & it fits like a charm.
End result...

Ouch!

I am glad you posted this, I was considering the K&N to free up room under the hood. My idea was (if it gets installed....) to have a snorkel sock as a pre filter then the K&N. But a cut like that sort of makes the snorkel pointless!

I still think the K&N is good in this situation but the long length of flex hose, not properly affixed to anything, was the issue. Re-installing the stock duct is the remedy; or at least it's a remedy.

This thread is a little older... but...

I came across the FJ Cruiser cyclonic air pre filter, and decided to get one to add between the snorkel and air box assembly on Mitch. Haven't yet got it installed, but I will let you know how it goes whenever I get around to it. The theory is nice, I hope the theory turns into practice. 3" ABS plumbing pipes fit well enough to it and just today got a 3.5" metal pipe from metal supermarket to weld a straight line into the air box along the lines of Felix at www.dinoevo.de.

I picked this up (unfortunately) new. But I was able to save $100+ buying it stateside vs in Canada. If you can find it at a wreckers, I think it came as standard equipment in 08-09, but was an extra off road option in 06 and 07, don't quote me on those years.

I did the same mode as DINOEVO with a snorkel be warned it really makes the intake loud....

difference probably non (L300 I mean even a 40% increase would work out to what 5hp???) :-D

I've had the snorkel installed already with the standard included gear, but like the idea of a larger pipe to the airbox, AND the pre filter mentioned above also needs the larger diameter intake... so hopefully I'll get around to it soon.

I did find a LOT of dust in the intake hose (pre airbox) :-( when I uninstalled the snorkel, so I think I'll be turning the snorkel head 90 degrees to the flow, or reversed as I'd had it for a little while after first putting it on, rather than forward facing for the 'ram effect'. Then again, N ALberta is a dusty place...

This appears to be an interesting mod, it would let you change to a more available filter too!
