Problems while travelling, please help

Sorry, I didn't see this question. I replaced the gauge but kept the wiring from the probe to the gauge. I've thought that the probe may be the problem if that's what you're implying but I will wait until the exhaust leak is fixed before I play around with this too much. If it turns out the leak is causing these problems then I'll try to return my new gauge to Napa.

But did you check or replace the wiring for the gauge itself. There should be the wiring to from the probe but also a power for the gauge and a ground for the gauge. I would definately check the gauge power and ground wiring. Fast and easy and cheap.

The new gauge comes with all of that and I re-wired the entire thing apart from the wires to the probe.

So the problem ended up being an exhaust leak coming from the exhaust manifold gasket. The mechanics are replacing that, the turbo gaskets, my rear 4x4 u-joint, cranking the torsion bars, and doing an alignment. They say it should take about 4-5 hours to replace the manifold gasket plus the other work it should be an expensive visit to Santa Fe.

You spray penetrate oil on nuts day before removing to fix gasket leak

Last time I had two manifolds gasket replaced on a Dodge V8 van (makes the delica look easy to work on) it cost $120.00 both sides including gaskets...

Just unbolt an rebolt ...post up on http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/ and see if anyone in the area has a shop and can help?


It is a pretty easy job and if you disconnect under the turbo you would need one less gasket...just need to pull the manifolds (intake and exhaust) off studs not remove usually (unless the gasket is really stuck).

Torsion bars just crank away and I would not worry about alignment unless way off after (wait till back)

Sorry for all the threads, they all started out being about different things and then ended up on the same topic.

The alignment is already way off and the tires aren't wearing evenly so I'll do both and rotate the tires. First order of business is getting the manifold working properly again and mounting my pyro back up.

Thanks, I'll post the results later. Today I'm just going to relax and recover from my fast paced travels and then off to explore Santa Fe some more until I head over towards Memphis on Wednesday.

Actually that's not bad since im betting they are going to remove the turbo and
the exhaust manifold. That turbo has to come off for the turbo gasket to go on.
If they were just doing the exhaust/intake manifold gasket they could simply move
the manifold/turbo away, clean it up and put the new one on. To do the turbo
they would pretty much have to take the manifold off, take the turbo off etc etc
I did that one myself too. Small hands....<getting the shakes>

Bad news, one of the bolts was sheared off so the shop is currently trying to drill out the piece that's stuck in the head. Also, I'm in need of new inner tie rod ends and was wondering if there is a North American part for this or if I should just have some sent over to the east coast for when I arrive there.

Well the exhaust is repaired but the pyro still isn't working. I've installed both gauges again and they just sit around the 3-4 mark and the needle twitches. It's nice to have the van back but it's annoying that there's still more to worry about.

Great you have your bus back. And yeah, too bad you haven't got to the bottom of the Pyro issue, but yah know, (I can already feel the eyebrows raising...) you don't need one. Sure it's nice to know for sure what you already kinda know from your oneness with your bus. You already know how to go up big hills and not over heat 'cause you've done lots and know how to go slow and easy and get there in the end. Just drive and love your bus and enjoy the trip. Hope the rest of your journey is less adventurous in the mechanical problem sense and more so in the seeing new shit and having fun sense - Keep posting pictures too :)

Before leaving on my trip I'd thought I wouldn't need one, and I suppose I don't, but going up long steep hills at high elevation in high heat with extra weight and lessened aero dynamics, it's unbelievably easy to get high temperatures. I would like the pyro working for the simple reason that it allows me to drive faster without fear of wrecking the engine.
