Sound system in the l400
Has any one put a good set of speakers in the l400 and a sub. I'm getting my new space gear soon and want some ideas as to wear I'm going to fit every thing. And what size are the speakers in the doors and back.

Welcome aboard mojoriders! You'll find that most if not all the speakers surrounds are done with your van if the speakers are stock.
Do a search on the forum first, here and delicaclub.com. I and others have already gone over this. Some varied opinion on depths but this has mostly to do with your ability to doing mods to panels.
In short:
Doors - 6.5"
Dash - 4"
Rear - 6x9"
Sub - Up to 4' is what your limited to with the back hatch opening. haha
Enjoy your new ride!

Re: Sound system in the l400
Thanks for getting back to me. Just the size of the speakers help. I'll get them before I pull it apart. The only hard part is trying to put the sub and amps in so they are out of the way. I don't want them to take up any useable space. But the sub is a must for me.

Re: Sound system in the l400
Speaker depth is important for the 6 x 9 speakers if you want them mounted behind the side panels. I installed S series Alpine speakers in the back but had to alter and cut the side panels to fit. (I also installed a 10" sub and a 320watt amp.). Somewhere on this site(in the mod section) you should find the specs for replacement speakers that will fit. Perhaps remove the existing rear speakers for comparison. I found directions for removeing side panels and dash panels, wiring, etc. as well on the site.

Re: Sound system in the l400
as for amp mounting...
I put my bigger one under the drivers seat and the smaller one under the passenger seat. The drivers seat has the most room, you could possibly stack them.

My amp for the sub is under the passengers seat I dont need one for the head unit.
I replaced all my speakers, I recommend you take a rear 6x9 out and bring it with you to the store. The reason for this is that the depth is very important due to side panel thickness.

Re: Sound system in the l400
I replaced the 6x9's in the rear with some Pioneer 6964 speakers. The top mount depth on them was 2 7/8 inches. Perfect fit and I didn't have to cut anything. I had 1\8 inch clearance between the back of the magnet and the exterior body panel. I called a trusted stereo install guy and he said that the clearance would be fine. My van didn't come with rear speaker mounts, but the wires were there.

Re: Sound system in the l400
There are other options for the woofer that you may want to consider.
Instead of the MDF box that takes up storage space, some custom installs incorporate fiberglass cavities in the rear side panels.
When it comes to bass only the volume of the box, not the shape is important to maximize the low range a bass speaker works at. Sealed enclosures can work quite well if the volume is right. I had a custom box with an 8" sub and it was made to fit where a folding jump seat was stored in my Nissan pickup. When it comes to bass some speakers are better suited for ported enclosures, and others are suited for sealed units. There is also some old school enclosure tech known as Band-Pass which maximizes bass from small woofer enclosures.
I have removed the drivers side panels off my L400 for some upcoming body work so I can take some pics and dimensions if you think that would be of any help.

Re: Sound system in the l400
6.75" for the front if I remember correctly.........
re: subs, put 2 10" shallow mount subs under rear seats, put amps between and run box right to rear door and create a small storage with lid behind rear seats.......
Never did install all my stereo before I had to sell....... have the subs and amps still if someone is interested.
Recommend SonicElectronix.com for stereo stuff, Futureshop and others major rip-off in Canada. I think they only ship UPS but even after brokerage and shipping, WASY cheaper compared to what you will get in Canada.
Cheers

I have a LWB, so my 12" sub and huge box fits behind the last set of seats with ease.

Re: Sound system in the l400
I'm not sure that you are limited as to what you could put in the back, there may be an attempt at conservation of space and usability. Keep in mind that when you look at the wavelengths as sub size that a 12" even in the rear of a LWB will sound better "outside" the vehicle, even a 10" is pushing it; but that depends on the goal. Good sound, or being heard down the road.........Mr. Flibble wrote:I have a LWB, so my 12" sub and huge box fits behind the last set of seats with ease.
