The CREGAN Chronicles

Post by CREGAN »

Alright- I figure I have been here long enough, gained alot of knowledge, and finally gotten my rig to where I am pretty darn happy and proud of it that I should make a ride thread. Now to save alot of picture posting and re-explaining I am going to give you all links to my previous threads, so if you want to see the process you can go check it out at your leisure.

The Begining
On September 24/09 I became a member of Delica.ca on the basis that I loved these vans after seeing a few on my travels around BC, mainly the Island, and I really wanted to know more about them. Plus I was tired of creeping as a guest and drooling over all the neat stuff people were doing to them and with them.

Finally after MUCH persuading of the better half I put my first inquiries in to Mardy at Amazing Autos on January 26/11 . The list I gave him of what I was looking for was long and somewhat unrealistic now looking back, but he listed the pros and cons of owning both an L300 and an L400. After the discussion it was decided that an L400 was the one for me and my newly expanding family. Well as most of you know I am not the most patient person in the world (which is funny as I am an Elementary teacher) and after browsing all the incoming vehicles from all the vendors I found the perfect one. It just appeared one day and seemed to tick almost all of the boxes on the unrealistic checklist I made and it was Mardy that was importing it. Here it is:
http://www.delica.ca/forum/94-delica-l4 ... 10212.html

Here are the only photos I had to go on until it arrived:

So I ran it past the wife, she gave me the green light, and I sold my Imprezza to get the down payment wrangled up. My main bargaining chip was that the Imprezza while a very nice and sporty car would not hold our expanding family where as a Delica would. Should have studied law because I can be very persuasive.

Since the down payment had gone through without a hitch now began the waiting game. Now just in case you forgot, there was a giant tsunami that destroyed Japan that as luck would have it was right around the time my dream van was in transit. I was worried to say the least. Luckily my van had already been on the ocean when the wave hit so nothing to worry about. Seemed to take forever though. After pestering Mardy weekly for updates on the arrival I finally received a date to fly out and pick it up. April 1/11. Yes April fools day.

So I flew out and Mardy picked me up at the airport for my first ever ride in a Delica- not mine but another just the same. So wierd to be a passenger on the other side of the vehicle. After signing my life away I was finally able to begin the trek home. It was surprisingly easy driving on the other side, and I became quite good at it by about the 1000 km mark. A little sketchy driving through a snowstorm on the Coquihala but I made it! The vehicle was now home to it's new adopted family.

http://www.delica.ca/forum/mardy-allen- ... 10563.html

Well, now that you all know the backstory I can get to the many small and big mods and issues I had. Here is a copy of my maintenance log that I created for this vehicle. I got the idea from my wifes grandfather who kept meticulous records for his truck before he passed away. I have also included a blank for anyone who wants to start their own:

As you can tell from it I have been very busy, and spent alot of money getting it to where it is today. I have learnt several lessons, some hard and others like the willingness of other members and vendors to help get things right. Without some of the members on this forum and some of the vendors here I would have lit it on fire and drove it off the nearest bridge, probably with myself still inside. But it did work out, and for that I thank you all, you know who you are 8-) . Here are some links to some of my upgrades, fixes, and other bits and bobs:

Light still on - screw it. If you need ABS you are not driving properly anyways.

http://www.delica.ca/forum/first-bonehe ... 10871.html
Never fixed it- Keep it as a battle scar and a reminder to shoulder check and not be an idiot!

http://www.delica.ca/forum/piaa-super-4 ... 11251.html
Fixed it myself. Needed a new bulb as a wire was burned through. Then had a shop run it into the side of a lift. Crazy glue still holding!

http://www.delica.ca/forum/i-need-help- ... 11696.html
Spent many an hour fiddling with this little POS. Kind of got it licked now thanks to help from a few friends on here.

http://www.delica.ca/forum/sprucing-up- ... 11539.html
Loved this one. Took lots of time but it sure turned out pretty.

http://www.delica.ca/forum/advice-neede ... 12024.html
This one was major heart ache thanks to a miss diagnosis (was told it was the PS pump, actually IP pump was leaking diesel) but Mardy helped me out HUGE! Thanks again.

http://www.delica.ca/forum/exhaust-leak-help-12570.html
Still got it, not as bad as winter though. Not dead yet so it must be OK.

http://www.delica.ca/forum/how-to-repla ... 12816.html
How to. Thanks to the UK site for walking me through it and I just provide the Canadian translation 8-)

http://www.delica.ca/forum/polishing-an ... 12849.html
Started and then said screw it! Decided to powder coat instead and I think I like it better.

Anyways, there is lots more but these were the highlights. Now to the pictures of my Inglorious Bastard now!

Recent Mod - Mud Flaps

Bought some mud-flaps on sale from CT ($15 a set). Had to do some wheel arch mods and lots of trimming of the poorly fitted arches but it turned out quite nice. Also put some Carbon Fiber Vinyl on the rear arch as a chip guard. That sucked, my finger tips still hate me from heating and pulling that crap with my wifes hair dryer. Made my own hangers out of fender washers, PVC coated aircraft cable, and the clevice pins from some cheap Princess Auto tow hooks. Macgyver only has the hair on me.

Edit: Notice the pretty new center caps! Thanks to Google translate and a shop in Japan, I was able to make it happen. Like them alot- really finishes up the wheel ... probably like it was meant to do.

Engine Mods
The list:
Blanked EGR
New TPS
Stainless Steel Intercooler Pipes
K&N Filter
Replaced the Valve Cover Gasket so it wasn't so messy.
Put metal screen over the intercooler, but under the plastic shroud. Works amazing at keeping bugs out.
Made a filter for the cabin air.

I have tons of other pics and stuff but it would take too much time and probably bore the crap out of you so I will just start throwing things up here whenever I can. We are leaving to drive out to Tofino on August 1 so hopefully I will run into some of you along the way. If not, feel free to look me up whenever you are in or around Deadmonton.

Tommorow we start our trek to the coast. Can't wait to get the F out of here and be on the beach at the ocean. Here is the trek if anyone would like to try to meet up for a visit:

Aug. 1 - Jasper
Aug. 2 - Kamloops
Aug. 3 - Squamish
Aug. 4 to 10 - Tofino
Aug. 11 - Vancouver
Aug. 12 - Kelowna
Aug. 13 - Canyon Hot Springs
Aug. 14 - Calgary
Aug. 16 - Home (boo)

Getting some work done at Coombs along the way. Excited to rid the van of a few more bugs, and get a new exhaust :-) . Will post pics from the trip when I get home.

Wow Craig - looks super sharp. I love white swb delicas.
If you are in Van on the 12th, drop by for a short bit. I am right near City Hall.

Hey all- First opportunity to check email and give an update. Jasper - Pissed rain and stayed in the Miette Hot Springs Resort, otherwise known as tha land time forgot. Never been renovated...ever. Anyways, Kamloops was hot but only a quick visit. The drive from Kamloops to Squamish SUCKED. From Lilloet to Whistler is horrible. Friggin goat trail. It was very hot and on one of the steep hills I finnally got to hear my turbo pressure release. Scared the piss out of me! Today we went Squamish to Tofino. Long drive but fun driving all the curves. Now sitting at the cottage sobering up and I thought I would give an update. Driving to Coombs for some work on Tuesday. Thanks for the offers from some of you- sorry I missed some already as I only have a flip phone (no internet). I will be able to check up more regularly now though. Got some good pics I will post when home.

Oh yeah, forgot to add that I saw my first Deli at Cache Creek- Blue over white L300. No wave back :-( Have seen about 10 including one stuck in the middle of a pack of Porches this morning on my way to the ferry, but no waves. Is the Deli-wave dead or what? Revive it because I feel like a twat when I wave and just get a weird look!

Craig
Love your van, the improvements and your photos/stories.

Just read your post re: CVI Appreciation Day...

"Unfortunately my Ferry arrives back at Horshoe Bay at 5. Guess I will just miss you guys. Would have been fun to meet up with all you west coast lot!"

Too bad Craig, some other time.

Well, just drove my baby to Coombs to leave it for a few days to work out a few of the kinks. I felt very comfortable leaving it there as they seem super knowledgable and even gave us a little tour of the shop. Now I am nervous and excited. Nervous that I am going to have to explain some slight cost over-runs, but excited to have my van running the way it can. I guess we will see later in the week. Still working on getting a new exhaust too so I am excited to see how it all turns out. Updates to follow.

Saw craploads of delicas on my way to Coombs. Even got a few waves. I always wave and some people just look scared. Makes me laugh.

I always wave too....and sometimes get that bewildered look back also.

Can't wait to get back on that lilloet goat trail, I bet! Did that road years back with an overloaded Westie....overheated brake pads really stink and don't work that well either...
