Why are L300 Captain Chairs limited when sliding back?

Post by nvanadm »

So, for the first time in 4 years I needed to use the whole sliding track and slide the captains chairs (middle row) all the way back. Didn't realize until now that there's a little bolt that prevents the chairs from sliding all the way back. Seems odd to me that there is so much extra useful track that is not able to be used.

Here's a picture of the bolt and the limitiation when sliding back...

So I removed the bolts and now how so much more room...

So the reason I'm posting is more just curiosity as to why these middle row seats are limited?? There is still another bolt right at the back and they still lock in place farther back so I don't see it as being a safety issue. So why?
Where the Japanese just worried about kids slamming the captains chairs into their siblings knees in the back seat??

That's weird mine did not have that bolt. III think someone added that, don't know why.

They come as standard with the bolt, the previous owner must have removed it. Many people do remove it but I don't know the reason for having it in the first place.

I suspect it relates to the introduction of shoulder belts in the back in 1991(?) Before that, the seats could be anywhere and the lap belts would function. Moving the seats back too far would make the shoulder belts useless. Try it out.

Glenn is correct its because of the shoulder belts and there limitations. Cheers Jay Tardis Deli

Thanks for the replies.

The anchor for the shoulder belts are still BEHIND the middle captain chairs even when they are all the way back. The shoulder belts still seem to be ok with the seats in this position.

Oh well, I'll be keeping the bolts out anyway because it just gives us way more options.

Thanks!
