Relays???

Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

Relays???

Post by Helicopter Doctor »

I've got a battery light and a fuel filter light that was coming on when I first started the van. After it warmed up and I got the revs up by driving on the highway, the lights would both go out. Next morning when cold, it would do the same all over again. Draining fuel filter didn't help and alternator tested fine. Now, al og a sudden, neither light is coming on, not even when they should when the key is first turned on prior to starting. Anyone know if there is a relay controlling those lights and where I might find it?

Don't alternator issues cause similar problems to this? Just my guess, and I am not a very good guesser.

Usually its 3 lights though, on the L300, and i believe the same on the 400, but i'd double check the alty and batteries etc.

Those lights are also indicative of low electrical power (i.e. not charging voltage of 13.4V or more). This condition exists when you're starting the vehicle (i.e. only the battery is supplying voltage (~12.6V or less), and when you're alternator is pooched (either the belt is loose or the alternator itself).

Check voltage supplied to battery terminals when engine is running, should read at least 13.4V up to 14.3V - if low, alternator is bad.

That still doesn't explain why those lights don't come on when the key is in the run position, prior to starting now. Shouldn't all warning lights illuminate when the key is first turned to the run position, before starting, and then they go out after the vehicle is running?

Can anyone confirm that?
Which lights do a self test prior to starting?

I hate to be the "start with the obvious" guy, but are the bulbs burnt out?

Battery, water in fuel filter, glow plugs, oil, AT, parking brake, seatbelt.

I don't have ABS. Parking brake was on and seatbelt was off for the test so I wouldn't call those lights a self test.

How's that?

Thanks Chris. I got the water in fuel light to illuminate by disconnecting the plug and jumping the pins, but it won't come on for the self test. Neither will the battery light. Checked the two pin plug at the alternator and it's showing constant batt voltage at one pin and switched batt voltage at the other when the key is turned on, as shown in the shop manual. Time to rip the dash apart and start checking bulbs I guess.

I still find it strange that I can trigger the water/fuel light by jumpering, but it's not coming on during the self test. Something weird is going on inside my dash, me thinks.

Engine running I get 13.4 at the alt and 13.3 at the batt. The lights would be on bright when I first started the van and then click off instantly once things warmed up and higher revs were hit on the highway. A couple of times they dimmed slightly before going out, but for the most part they switched off instantly. I pulled the alt and had it tested (tested fine), changed the fuel filter, engine oil and filter. Since then, no lights even prior to starting. Water in fuel light will illuminate if you jumper the wires at the filter.
Prior to starting I get the following lights: glow plugs, oil, seat belt, park brake, SRS and "sport"(for the ECS). I used to get the batt and water/fuel lights as well.

Delica.ca has a decent set of PDF manuals for tech savy folks. Here is the wiring schematic for the charging system and I did notice a relay at the mid point between the ignition switch and the voltage regulator.

Thanks. That's helps a bit. Anyone seen a diagram detailing how the fuel filter water warning circuit works?
