Toyota Aluminum rim lugs

I have a near-new set of winter tires mounted on OEM toyota rims, similar to this:




I am in need of lug nuts though! The set I got with the rims & rubber were slightly too long, and required the use of washers, which apparently is a big no-no on rims - one wheel actually loosened and ended up damaging the rim (since fixed)

I believe the Toyota OEM lugs are slightly too small (not deep enough) given the size of the bolts on the Delica, but I am not certain of this.

Can anyone assist me? I am sure I can source the nuts here in cowtown, I just need some certainty on what exactly I need to get.

You have a couple of options:

1) Visit a custom wheel shop and see their selection of wheel nuts(aka acorns). If they don't have it in stock its a fair bet the shop can get a set brought in. Chrome Acorns run anywhere from 5.00 - 10.00 each though....Ask of they they have used ones...long shot on that one.

2) Go to the 4x4 shops like Modern Motors or National 4 wheel drive....both are just off the Blackfoot Trail. They both carry non-bolt on type wheel spacers that, provided your studs are long enough, could allow you to use the Toyota acorns you already have. The price varies depending on thickness but 1/4 to 1/2" thick used run about 20.00 each and yes they have 6-bolt styles. This will move your rim/tires out a little and give you a wider, aggressive stance which IMHO improves the Delica charm!

I actually do not have the OEM toyota lugs, and the ones I did get weren't working - they would 'bottom out' before being fully torqued - hence the need for washers, which then caused further troubles.

However, I will visit the 4x4 shops and see what solutions they have for me.

I think that bottoming out is what the wheel spacers are for. Rather than washers it sets the rim further out which in essence makes the lugs shorter so your nuts won't bottom out anymore. If you don't mind the more aggressive stance it's a much cheaper alternative.

Just be aware that wheel spacers can introduce their own problems/safety issues. I had some 8mm spacers for a short time on my Liteace to fix an offset problem and they were a huge pain in the ass to keep properly lined up when doing your own wheel changes...very quickly got rid of them.

Ideally I'd like to find aftermarket 'oem-style' toyota lugs, and not use spacers, but I'm still unsure if they will work with the delica lug bolts. I know the thread size is the same, just unsure if there's enough bolt to grab once the wheel is on...

Actually, reading some old threads on this topic, I see that it's actually not that the Deli bolts are too short, but rather too long and the toyota oem lug can't thread on far enough to torque properly. So other users have resorted to washers... I'm a bit hesitant to do that though... hmmmm

You need longer nuts. or open ended nuts to allow the extra to poke out.

You can buy lug nuts Toyota OEM (flat lug centric with washer) both in shallow and deep shank as show in the picture below.

What you are referring to and others perhaps is the use of the short shank Toyo lug nut which will not fit on the long Mitsu wheel stud.

I have used that style rim with Toyo OEM long shank lug nut as it should be. Perfect fit.

Ok, thanks for the head's up Jesse. I have emailed a couple 4wd places in Calgary about an open end lug, if they don't carry those I'll see if they can get the long shank lug.

Keep in mind that the open ended ones leave the tip of your lug bolt exposed to the elements so they'll need to be replaced sooner than if you went with the long shank ones.
