1988 Vanwagon needs engine
It over heated it 3 times but still ran but developed a miss that always occured at 50 MPH. Drove it that way for 2 months then it wouldnt start. That was 5 years ago. Ive decided to sell 3 of my 4 vehicles and that one was my favorite to drive. What Im asking is what is the best engine to replace it with and how to do that.

What are you looking for???
Diesel? Gaz? Big? Small? with or without transmission? Bolt in place or heavily modified mouting?
There's a world of possibillity.
Do you want to drag with your Bus? If so you should get the corvette LS1. Probably the best crate engine.
Otherwise, I'd suggest you do a hole lot of research before you start modifying your bus because it's a slippery way downhill to being broke.
Major thing you'll have to consider before anything:
1. Fitting (does the new engine you want's will fit in the VW bus engine bay
2. Transmission compatibility
3. Will you do a stand alone engine or will your rewire all the sensor in your van
4. The list is to long to go on but I think you get the point.
Diesel engine : find a 2.8L from the L400
Gaz: Find a Civic, Dodge caravan, Toyota Rav4 2.0L, VW 1.8T engine (fast)
But it's the kind of project you'll either pay a mechanic a LOT of money or that will be a life project for you if you indeed have the mechanical, fabricating, welding, etc kind of knowledge

Hey,
You mean US model L300 mitsubishi vanwagon ya?
So I think your motor is a 4G64 which
Was used in alot of other north american
Vehicles put out by mitsubishi and dodge/chrysler.
Wikepedia has a good list of other vehicles it was
used in.
Search for sirius 4G56 engine and you will find lots
of options.
Right

Re: 1988 Vanwagon needs engine
Thanx for the replys. Yes it is the US model, built in Japan July 1987 VIN JA4FN44L7JA001515. Titled as a 1988. What I am looking for is the newest replacement engine that will bolt and wire in the easiest, with working heater and AC.. When last driven I had to put cardboard in front of the radiator to get any heat. My brother and I are good fabricators but dont know anything about auto electronics. Havent been able to find detailed info on engine removal or replacement. Am hoping that someone has done something similar with only US parts available..This will be a daily driver and maybe a burial container{ I like it that much}{Yes , its legal on private property}
