Turbo tug and rough starts
Hi everyone,
94 LWB Paj with the 2.8 5 speed. Starts fine, but sputters for the first 30 seconds or so. I'm not sure if the cold will make it worse as I have only had it for two months. Even on a warm summer morning it would sputter for 30 seconds. What does everyone think? Fuel filter? Injectors? Glowplugs? The PO said the injectors were replaced around 30000km ago, the rig has 140000km on it.
Also, the turbo seems to tug and sputter on heavy load. No leaky sounds or purging, but an intermittent tug on heavy load during acceleration. Once I hit cruising speeds whether it be highway or 70 km for the city, the truck runs fine.
Any and all help would be great. Hoping to get "The Enterprise" nice and healthy before the -35 hits this winter.

Check your glow plugs. Pull all 4, and either use your battery or a charger to see how long they take to glow red.
I just did mine, and it makes a huge difference in how it starts.

I would also say check the glow plugs first, easy to pull and test..

I've been thinking it may be that dreaded front seal on the IP. Anyone in Edmonton willing to help me tackle this? Is this a hard thing to do? I've done turbo's, lift kits, brakes, ball joints, tie rods, and pyro's before, so I am not completely hesitant to try this on my own. A $14 seal is way more feasible than a $400 bill at a nice shop, especially being a student. Any recommendations/reservations?
PS. I will check the glowplugs for the cold start issue as well, and replace them accordingly. The invitation to do the IP is what I'm thinking will cure the tugging problem - happy it's not a turbo problem so far

What makes you think it's the front seal? Any leaks left behind? It could even be the top seal, which is very common. (Had to do mine already)

Forum 56, SRI in New West, BC suggested that it could be this problem, and that is why I am leaning that way. No leaks yet, I will be taking a better look at it this weekend. Where in Alberta are you? If you're in Edmonton we should get together sometime.

Mine cold starts like a grump too. Just cycle the glow plugs 3 times before you turn it over and turn it over RIGHT after the light goes out on the 3rd. Seems to love that and start up like a dream.

Any chance it's your transmission? Mine "grabs" a little through 3rd gear. Try flicking the switch to "power" and see if it makes a difference.
I've done the IP seal. It's not technically challenging, and there are lots of good guides out there. The issue is it will take you 3 hours to get the pump out, and another 3 hours to get it all back together. Make sure you do it right the first time.

Pull the EGR valve and see if its gummed up inside or even functioning at all. If yours had a blanking plate installed in between the EGR and exhaust manifold...which some people have done....this could be worth checking on how good the seal is. Leaks at the EGR system do weird things like running rough, rich, pop/fart.....

Alright so today I took a closer look. No leaks on the injection pump or fuel lines. I also did an oil change with filter, air filter change and fuel filter change and ran a can of seafoam through the system. Hopefully this remedies my problem. If it doesn't, then I'll be looking at replacing some of those blasted seals on the IP. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks for all the help, peeps!

I did some research and took the advice about the EGR. It is not blanked off, it wasn't too messy but it needed a good cleaning thats for sure. Also, I found a ball bearing (BB) in the inlet tube coming from the valve cover. After reading, I decided to take it out. Upon start up it sputtered a bit, but then the pedal felt like it was breathing better - more responsive. I'm driving a good 60 km tonight to pick up the trophy wife from the airport, so I'll fill it up and see if I get any better l/100km, power or sputtering. I'll keep updating. I appreciate all the advice. If I still have problems, next will be the glowplugs, then lastly the IP seals.

I've seen other ways to disable the egr and the bearing is needed in the process to block that tube.
