Batteries for 12 years!

While I'm posting this in the Pajero sub-forum, it could just as easily be applicable to any vehicle.

As most of us are familiar, these JDM's generally didn't see as much use and abuse in their previous life back in Japan as we subject them to here in North America. And so, some of the perishable items may not need replacing when the vehicle lands here.

The batteries in our 2-dr Pajero were an example of this: they tested correctly when we bought it and so we didn't bother having them changed. Now, three years later, they've finally given up the ghost, and if I read the date sticker correctly, Sept 2000, we got the previous owner's money's worth.

PS: A Montero 3.5 litre will give the correct battery. We went to Interstate Batteries and the first thing they did was cursor-select the drop-down menu for vehicle/model/year, but I just told him what battery to install instead. Still reluctant, they installed a perfect match for physical size and electrical rating.

I'm not one to follow the standard when I comes to batteries. Went to an exide dealer and went for the biggest 2 that would fit with the largest ratings. In -35 you can tell its cranking hard and fast.

I know what you mean. Turns out the new batteries have 50% more capacity than what was in there (I was able to find the specs on the Japanese batteries), and what a difference.

They must make batteries better over in Japan. I replaced mine when I bout it 2 years ago and they were the original batteries (the van would have been 19 years old!)

I replaced the battery in my 94 about 2 months; original battery. That's 18 years. Good on those Japanese. I went with Interstate as well; they honour they're warranty world wide and you don't need any paper work to claim it!
