That is a classic! You are on your A-Game in this thread. I laughed out loud while giving a math test this morning.

And by the way - I landed my van here and had it on the road for under $5000. I scored at auction. BUT - since then I have put a ton of work, and a couple thousand into it. Time or money? Which one do you have more of? Shop accordingly, like everyone else is saying.

Haha - some funny replies!

Thanks for all the comments! Yeah I am looking at one vehicle, its got some minor issues, just trying to figure out what its worth and if I should even be trying to pick it up at all.. I'd like to build this van into a camper vehicle for all my adventures in the mountains.

Valve gasked, pinion seal, transfer case front output shaft seal and injection pump gasket are "wet", but not leaking, and the rack and pinion steering will probably need to be replaced, so its a tough one..

I used my mad hula hoop skills to get the deal on my L300.

Here is the inside of a typical L300:

Yes, it's an L300 but there were tons of L400's for sale for $6000 when I bought mine and the L400's were actually selling for less than the L300's on average. I haven't monitored vehicle sales since I bought mine 2.5 years ago though.

The reason is most L400's have solid gold stranded wiring that alone is worth over $6000 with todays gold prices. I have brought in over 200 L400's just for the gold and used the ~$800,000 profit to buy the twinkie recipe and rights from the now defunct Hostess company.

Some of the above information is 100% true...some of the above information is 100% false kind of like that from your mechanic. 8-)

All of the cheaper l400's I've seen, have been plain jane base model vans (I'm sure there are some of the higher end ones too, just haven't seen it personally) And if that's what your after, go for it. Unfortunately, there are also a fair number out there that have been safetied and licensed, but are still missing compliance items like e-coded headlights. Make sure you know what you are getting. The real deal's don't last long, as in Nxski's case, he got a good deal (on an l300), but he had everything in order, and moved on the deal fast. Had he waited even an hour, he would have missed out. If the vehicle has been for sale for a while at a reduced price, I would recommend looking it over real close, there is probably a reason no one else has snatched it up. I have imported all my l400's myself, and have not "landed" one here for anywhere near $5000, but I like mine fairly loaded, and am always quite specific as to some of the options I have to have, and am willing to pay for them. And while I don't consider myself to be a hippie, since I've added an l300 to my collection, I find I'm eating more granola and cutting my hair less often. Is this some kind of subconscious metamorphose? Are people watching me?

I have a hard time believing that there were ever "tonnes" of L400s selling for $6000 - and I seriously doubt that L400's were selling for less, on average, than L300's at any time since they were first introduced here - especially when they were relatively new. Maybe in a few years when the are harder to come by. I would need some empirical proof to back that one up.

I only paid $908 for my Jasper at auction, and after shipping, taxes, exporter's fee, headlight lenses and compliance - I came in it at $4700 - it's really true - I even lucked out with a nice set of DOT tires already on it. This was below the average selling price, for sure, and I've seen nice series 2 L400's go for as much as $6000 at auction. But there are awesome deals every day at the auctions if you are willing to compromise, take a chance, or if you are willing to wait. This is how the dealers make money - certainly not buying $6000 vans.

As far as L300's go - I loved my L300 in a way I will never love my L400. But, I've noticed that hippies don't always age that gracefully (once you start loosing it, time to cut it). And recently, I've started to notice some pretty sexy soccer moms!

I should be more clear here. While searching on Craigslist, I was tempted by the L400's which were almost all around the 6000-6500 mark whereas the L300's were mostly around the $8000-8500 mark. This would have been between August of 2010 until November 2010 (when I was monitoring the trends). In the end I went for the L300 because I preferred the styling and I needed lots of interior space but couldn't afford to have a long vehicle. It's worth noting too that the L300 is not necessarily an older vehicle since the L300 and L400 are both still in production now along with the D5. (I'd be curious to see how the prices of all three compare when new)
