4m40 in a Montero?

I know it can be done, but how hard is it to put a 4M40 in a Montero sport that shares the transmission with the Delica?

Don't know about the 4M40 going into a previously-gasser-engined Montero, but I do know that a gasoline-engined Mitsubishi VanWagon had to have the whole front end un-stitched and swapped out for the front end of an L300 Star Wagon (literally hundreds of spot welds broke apart and then welded back together). Mostly, the diesel engine was 'backwards' to the gasoline engine (exhaust, oil cooler, and battery compartment).

But, a Montero/Pajero is a body-on-frame vehicle (I think) so it may just be a matter of 'adjusting' the engine mounts.

as far as i know a monty sport is the same as a challenger but LHD. a challenger has a 2.8 IIRC, so it may be relatively simple?

I would think easy if you had a donor complete truck...

Need to remove wiring for EFI, wire in gauges, exhaust, fuel system from tank, intake, add wiring for fuel shut off and wire in glow plug ecu...

If you had a cut off front end or complete truck should be I would do it..(but I have a welder, grinder, and no fear)

Not sure yet. If I do, I have to wait a few years to get a 4m40 imported. While they are legal for offroad use, they are not rated for highway use yet. So the 4m40 has to be 21 yeas old to import it according to EPA laws.

Of course, I guess I could just get one and point out that it is legal to use in a Caterpillar.

Yes, but it would be missing all the bits that would make it work properly in a Montero. I doubt the radiator and intercooler would be spec'ed the same.

Also, it is actually illegal to use the 4m40 for this purpose in a Montero as the engine has not been certified for highway use. So the 4m40 would have to be 21 years old to actually be legal.

(EPA has different ratings for offroad/machinery vs highway certification).

I have seen 1995 Montero's with the Locking rear diff for about $1000 on Craigslist with a blown gas engine. Would be the perfect vehicle to drop the 4m40 into!

Caterpillar Earth Movers I believe. They were first used in the 1990's, but I don't know exactly when. But again, I would have to say I am explicitly importing it for a replacement for a Caterpillar - which would make the other bits from a Pajero mighty suspicious!!!
