AirCare for newly imported Delicas

I've had a look through the board for postings on this topic, but can't seem to find a definitive answer to the question:

Does my newly imported Delica have to pass AirCare in order to be registered/insured for the first time?

Obviously, AirCare is not an issue for the interior, but I live in the Lower Mainland where it is.

On a similar note, it seems that the vehicle must physically present at the time of registration in order for the ICBC representative to inspect the VIN number markings... Correct?

Additionally, has anyone had specific experience with specific insurance offices in Richmond, Burnaby, New West or Coquitlam who have experience registering Japanese imports?

You are exempted for Air Care for upto one year provided that you are buying one year insurance upfront. Yes, for the first time registration, the vehicle has to be present in order to note down any existing damage and to sight the VIN on the vehicle.

No problem i can help you for that when it comes to registering your newly delica in Rmd. no need to aircare for 1 yr. as this vehicle is out of prov.its exempted for 1 yr.

Its just about time to insure my Delica for the first time. Inspection is just around the corner. Where do you have to present your delica for insurance? Is this at an ICBC office or any insurer you choose?

My insurance rep. wants to send in copies of my paperwork ahead of time just to avoid any hassles from ICBC, and now this change!! I guess life is full of changes. Is this a 2008 new idea? Please elaborate with anything else you know.

I bought mine in a private sale from squamish (air care exempt) and brought it into north vancouver (air care req'd) and ICBC wouldn't insure it until it had been aircared. We did our sale and transfer of ownership, new insurance, and aircare all over a span of about two hours the day I got it.

Diesel delicas should pass aircare no problem, unless you have an especially smoky exhaust. The only thing they test on a diesel is exhaust opacity. They put it on the dyno looking thing and rev it through all it's gears, if it makes more than 30% smoke in the exhaust it doesn't pass. I would say my 1992 has average smokiness (less than an old VW but more than a new mercedes!) and it passed no problem. If you wanted to be really really sure you could add some smoke reducer to the fuel before you go down.

"Less than an old VW"... then your Delica doesn't smoke at all! 'cause old VW surely smoke less than a diesel...

I mean the old diesel rabbits/bugs/vanagons.. most of them were pretty smoky
