strange sunroof problem. Anyone had this?

Post by mapleridge818 »

I was told when I bought my l400, that the sunroof was not working properly, and needed to be closed with the allen key if it's opened. I decided with the weather getting nice, I should fix it now. I opened the sunroof to see what exactly it's doing. First I just hit the button to pop it up. It popped up fine. I hit the button again to close it, and it came back down into the close position, but then returned to the up position again. I tried opening it all the way, and it did that fine too. Slide right to the back. Hit the button to close it, and it slid all the way forward, then came down into the close position, and then popped back up to the popped up position. It moves up and down fine and forward and back fine (mind you it makes a clicking sound as it goes back) but when you try to close it, it closes and then pops back up?
Anyone had this problem?

Well that's kind of lame. I guess I'll just keep a 3mm allen key handy incase the weather gets ugly!

The UK forum recommends taking out the gear that pulls the track and flipping it over as one side of it begins to wear and that is what causes the slipping.

What would be best is to replace the gear entirely, but I don't know of any place that has the same gear type. You could probably get some 3D printed somewhere.

EDIT:

I just did some googling, seems you could take a gear to a custom gear cutting shop and have a bunch made. The gear stripping is a known problem, which is why you should not open or close the sunroof while moving as the windstream puts pressure on the gear causing the teeth to strip.

You could get a new gear made of Titanium or Steel, but then this would probably damage the track itself I would suspect. Something has to give.

Titanium spot is at one of its lowest points in 10 years...can't lose. Go titanium or go home. Steel is too boring for a L400 mod. :-)

The thing is, my sunroof moves about freely, so I don't think the gear is stripped. It doesn't get stuck open, it closes, but then opens itself again.

It sounds like the limit switches that control where the sunroof stops are out of adjustment, which could likely have been caused by the gear sliping. I'm not sure, but there might be something in the l400 shop manual (in the downloads section) that shows how to time the sunroof.

I just dealt with this issue last week. My sunroof has been acting up since last summer So I just closed it manually and left it. I followed the UK site for solutions on this. I took out the motor, flipped the cog, put lock washers on the motor bolts and sealed it all back up. I was even missing a screw behind the motor. Getting the limit switches set up was tricky. It was still grinding and acting weird. I took the sunroof right out next and lubed up the tracks (very generously) with some silicone lube. I opened and closed it a few times, put the glass back in and it's working like a dream (fingers crossed). HTH

Here's the link to the UK site.
