seeking tips for installing l400 dash kit

Post by cd_photo »

We recently put a new stereo in our L400, and the console dash piece disintegrated when I removed it (was cracked quite a bit already). I'm getting a new one soon enough and am wondering if anyone has any tips to provide for installing it, so I can avoid breaking the new one.

Thanks,

Colin

I got a new one myself. It won't be as fragile. They get brittle as they get older.

Start at the top
Take the gauge pod off first by prying up the back cover and the rest is easy

I have found that by reaching up inside the console the "help" push the snap clips out really helps.

Remove the glove box (easy), then reach up and push out on the little pegs.

I know your question is about installation, but I suspect you have to remove it again because something goes pear shaped. At least I did!!

The stereos we get here don't always line up with the mounting plate screws so itrequire some spacing adjustment to get it properly centered and have the correct depth within the new console opening.

Are you installing a single DIN (standard narrow face). The Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eagle Talon use the same stereo side plates and some have a little storage bin that fits below the stereo and fills the hole.

Or you getting a large double DIN unit? (fills the factory hole better).

The new console will probably have the upgraded white plastic clips and not the metal ones, which tend to grip too tight. The new console will be more flexible so breakage is not likely.

Take your time when you remount the defrost/hazard switch assembly and drive the screws in a few turns then back them out to clear out debris. This will reduce the chance of breaking the screw mounts on the new part.
