Rubber Seal on the Bottom of the Windshield

Post by CREGAN »

Hey all, for my second beef of the night, I am wondering if anyone else is having/had the same issue as I am. The plastic molded piece at the bottom of the front windshield on my van is not fitting properly. It rattles on the passenger side and when I open the hood it appears to rub and lift the passenger side. Today driving home I noticed the rubber seal had lifted out and was flapping against my wiper. The rubber seal, as it was formerly known as, has now become a hard brittle piece of turd. Are these pieces easy to replace and can the be replaced? Does anyone know of were to get said pieces?

Anyone else had the same issue and have any solutions to share?

I ordered some rubber from Rocky Mountain Imports. I spoke with them and you can't just get the rubber without buying the whole tray that houses the wipers ($180). SO, he said just to try this other rubber stuff they have for putting the fender flares on old landcruisers. It cost me less than $10 bucks and it has an adhesive side to hold it in place. Just waiting for it to arrive and I will post some pics and tell you how it went.

Make sure you get some cross sectional images of the Mitsu 'turd' and the replacement strip. I too have this issue with my L400 but its holding on....mostly....sort-of.....okay its lifting too on the left side....little turd! As in Bast-----.....
Yeah I joined the Dark Side because the medical plan is top shelf!

For those unsure of what we are talking about- here is a picture of mine and what the "formerly known as rubber" seal is doing. Right now it is a crusty hardened POS that constantly blows up and whaps off my windshield on a windy day.

I will post pictures when I get the new rubber to put on. I also had to buy some new clips that hold the tray down as the one on the far passenger side is missing. Unfortunately they come in bags of 8 so if any one needs on let me know. It looks like it is going to be a party trying to get at the missing clip- can't wait.

Update and completion.

Driving home yesterday the old POS decided to blow up and wrap around the wipers. This rerminded me that I bought a replacement from RMI. Well, not an exact replacement, but now that I have installed it looks like it might work pretty damn good. It is for fender flairs on Landcruisers, but it is the same profile and style, but way better as it is actually bendable and not petrified. It also has an adhesive backing which may or may not help, but it is definitely better than the original.I also had to change one of the white clips that hold the little plastic tray down at the bottom of the windshield. Here are the pics:

Here are the numbers for the part in case anyone else needs to order.

Here are the part numbers for the little plastic clips that hold that sucker down. These were the most expensive part which sucked as I only needed one but had to buy the set. SO if anyone needs some...

Here is a comparison of the old and new profiles:

And here is the finished product. Looks like it was made for it.

The rubber was actually very inexpensive and I have to give a big shout out to Rocky Mountain Imports because they suggested this product. The only alternative is to order the whole plastic tray in order to get the new seal (I think it would have come to a 2-$300 bill. No thanks). I will keep you posted on how durable it is. Tah dah!
