Camperizing The Delishhh??
Sup folks??
This is my first summer with a '93 Delica Super Exceed with the Crystal Light roof and all the trimmings. It's a sweet ride for sure and it replaced a '88 Westy I had previous.
So my question is how can I make this new ride into sort of a day camper?
It has the two middle captains chairs that swivel and move back and fourth and the bech seat at the back. I've screwed around with the different seating arrangements to attempt a makeshift bed. It's not great though. Has anyone done something different in the rear to make a better bed. Whatever mods I do, I want to keep it original as possible.
Rising Sun hooked me up with some original curtains from a wrecked Deli but there's no curtain for up front like the Westy's have. Has anyone done something crafty for this problem?? Again, I don't want to alter what's original up front if I can.
Always loving the site and the creativity that people have here. Any advice is always appreciated:)
Cheers, Phil

Re: Camperizing The Delishhh??
For SvR we just ran a stretch cord just behind the front seats (Hooked to the ends of the curtain rails). It was attached via picture frame hardware (adjustable hangar loops that fit perfectly into the rails). Then we threaded a curtain across.
I will post some pics in the very near, as I don't seem to have any.

Yeah that sounds good. I'm surprised Mitsubishi didn't have something for the front windows like the Westy's had. There's curtains everywhere else.... Post pics when you get a chance :)

Mitsubishi did make a curtain rail for behind the front seats. There are a few members with them but they aren't all that common unfortunately. I recently found a copy of a Delica Accessories Brochure that got lost in the shuffle when someone's link broke. I just reposted it in the Delica FAQ Section.

Here is my set-up.
The fame hangars fit perfect in the channels. The stretchy cord and u-hooks I had lying around and to hold the top up I used traditional curtain hooks.

Re: Camperizing The Delishhh??
I made a simple bed from recycled 2x4s and plywood, and use a foam mattress from our old tent trailer. I remove all the seats for the summer camping season. The design is simple enough that I can take the bed out in the fall and put the seats back in so we can carry passengers in the winter.

Re: Camperizing The Delishhh??
I have one of the "rare" curtain rails behind the front seats to partician the front from the rear. One could easily fab a similar rail to use the vent screws like the stock partician rail. The easiest would be to use a piece of 1/4 metal rod with a couple of thin tabs folded over it to screw into. Bend to suit, then slide the tabs behind the vent covers and screw them in place.
As for the interior arrangement. I removed the rear bench then turned the front captains chairs rearward and slid them forward to the front. My folding beds legs were just taller than the seat bottoms and the bed extends out over them almost completely. The legs are spaced just right to clear the rear wheel humps as well. I am not of fan of "building" beds that will be hauled around as I just camp at specific planned times.
If you want to keep the rear bench, the simplest solutions is always a plywood sheet between the seats with a few supports, although hardly the elegant solution you may be thinking of...

Thanks guys, They're all good ideas. I had considered just putting a sheet of plywood between the seats. But it would be kind of half assed at best.
That's one thing I loved about having my Westy's. And I think the used car guide "lemon aide" put it best. You'll be quite comfortable while your waiting for the tow hook......

Re: Camperizing The Delishhh??
Here's what I did to put a bed in my L300. It was perfect for us. No permanent changes, just take the back seat out, put the bed unit in. 4 rubbermade bins fit underneath that contained pretty much all our camping gear, tie downs in cargo area, bulkhead to keep cargo and passengers separate. We used pre-made foam matresses from jysk that fold up. I would consider selling this system as my L300 is awaiting repair at the moment. I still need to finish the sides of it - but feel free steal the idea or ask questions.

Like yourself I have had Westys in the past and love them, except for the reliability factor. With my rig I tried to combine the best of both worlds, and feel I have succeeded. Not quite a Westy, but more than a Delica. A Westfelica!

Re: Camperizing The Delishhh??
Yeah, both of those mods look pretty good. I considered putting Westy furniture in my Delica as well.
But the big plan is that I'm currently working on importing a cab over diesel camper from Japan. My importer, the guy who sold me the Delica is helping me find something. But they're not cheap and it's taking some searching to find something decent and reasonably priced. And since the camping season is finally here in Ontario a quick & tidy mod is in order just for the intern.
I really love my Delica. And when the right camper comes along, I'll have the best of both worlds. And that will be it. No more pesky left hand drive vehicles:)
