CV boot rip quick fix

Post by macro »

So I recently had my upper ball joints replaced and the shop ripped one of my outer CV boots slightly. Not too pleased. I was looking around for a fix to hold me until I get a new one ordered up and I saw quite a few folks have used Shoe Goo! Seems like it will give you enough time to get it fixed or even as a great repair while out on the trial. Here's some pics!

Filled the boot with grease from this handy dandy injector tip. Looks like a hypodermic needle!

Liberally apply Shoe Goo and let set for as long as you can!

I will give an update tomorrow as to how this went. I think I got it everywhere it was needed but only one way to know!

50km round trip to work today, so far so good!! It hardened up seemingly like a very tough silicone. Not a bad fix in a pinch!

Good write up macro! The Shoe Goo might be added to one's emergency kit for off-road "walks".

They do make a kit for this type of repair; it contains a special boot that goes on without removing the CV from the vehicle.

I would have used one of those if the rip was bigger, but I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to try out a usable trail fix!

Thanks! I googled "cv boot quick fix" and a whole bunch of people in various forums have used Shoe Goo for one thing or another. Seems pretty versatile!

Thought I'd give a one week update, so far, so good! Actually, it's so good I've been lazy in getting a proper boot replacement. Once I do swap it out, I'll post pics of the repair up close.
