There's debate about the manual transmission for the 300's, it's generally considered be be very poor for the 400's though and extremely rare. Its funny that you should say the L400 looks less van like as that's usually why 300 owners mock them. Also, contrary to what you might think, the 300's engine is easier to access and work on.

Perhaps it is. I still like the look of the L400, though, and I think, now, that a slushbox (automatic) might be the way to go. Which brings me to another question...how is the transfer case switched?

First time I'd seen a pic of the cockpit from that angle. Parking brake, too. I take it the automatic transmission shifter is one of the stalks, as always...

Yep. It is the left stalk - the big one. The Overdrive button is on the end of it.

I prefer a manual transmission myself, but for a Delica, the automatic is the right choice because of the gearing.

Looks like the Dalek is a slushbox aka automatic.
