I did mine out of eco board. Its similar to white board ,what they use for kitchens but it is half the weight and waterproof. My friend is a kitchen/cabinet maker so it was recommended and built by him.

For my actual sleeping platform I used 3/4" ply, you can have less supports underneath that way.

Baltic birch plywood , it comes in 5'x5' sheets , has very thin consistent veneers of hardwood and no voids, so you can use thinner sheets.

Where do you get that? Sounds perfect for some other projects.Artacoma wrote:Baltic birch plywood , it comes in 5'x5' sheets , has very thin consistent veneers of hardwood and no voids, so you can use thinner sheets.

Most lumber yards carry it around here, if you are in a Rona/Home Despot dominated region try looking under hardwoods in the yellow pages. Windsor Plywood carries it as well. A 12 mm sheet should run around $45.
The 5' size is nice for spanning across the van without joins.
