Not impressed with pro comp/ rant

Ok so yesterday It appears I blew the front shocks in my van, mostly due to the horrible roads in yellowknife, but also because of the garbage pins they sell with pro comp shocks. The pins they sell with the socks are rolled steel, well thats all fine and good, but they tore out of my a arms, and now I have a pretty much undriveable van. Even if I get new pins, it looks like the RH fwd shock has been leaking for some time. They are only a year old. between that, the oil leaks, the intake manifold leak, the leaking axle, leaking tire, etc etc I am getting pretty tired of how very high maintenance my van is. I can say with confidence I have never had so many problems with a vehicle than this. uuuugh. I am swiftly running out of patience. /rant Sorry for ranting, just had to put it out there.

Anyone else had problem after problem?

Bummer. Sorry to hear of your litany of issues... My bus has had a few problems over the years, but not TOO many. So far at any rate... Good luck.

Thanks, Going to call pro comp on Monday and see if I can get a new set of pins ordered. Got a bunch of parts on the way soon too. the only problem is I only have about 2 or 3 weeks before the snow starts to fly. the leaves are already starting to turn and the temperature is dropping so winter is fast approaching

I guess the biggest problem for me is that fixing my van is less of a hobby and more of a chore. I am an aircraft mechanic by trade, so I fix old stuff all day, so it is hard to get motivated to fix my own stuff haha

With my experience in the 4x4 magazine world Procomp does not have the longevity, reliability they claim to have. I put procomp shocks on my Xterra after the OEunits gave out. 6mos is all I got before they leaked fluid and completely failed. The stock units were a better shock I guess. Moved to Rancho next and got 2 years before leaks occured. Moved to Monroe, reliable bright yellow, plain jane. They are still there after 4 years and my neighbor owns it now. No leaks. Works good.

I don't trust Procomp products and most serious off-roaders don't either. There are just too many failures for me to trust their entire product line.

I've had rancho 9000s for 3-4 years.
while they are a nice ride, after this time of light offroad use, they are now rusty as hell.
I suspect I will have to replace them in about a year.

all I can say, is that I will not buy their products again, and am very glad I didn't buy the wireless remote system for them. very disappointed.

hmm good to know, maybe i should look into getting a different set if i want to avoid another pin failue! also good to know about the ranchos. It seems I have some research to do.

I'm wondering if there is a KYB cross over. I loved their shocks on my other vehicles.

I would almost want to paint the rs9000s with rock guard to protect them from rusting out.

My Procomp 9000's feel quite soft, but I've had them for almost 3 years and have put over 80,000km on them. Butch at CVI thought they still had tons of life when I showed them to him a couple weeks ago. As for van repairs, I've averaged quite a bit less than $2000/20,000km which is what is average for a 15 year old vehicle, and mine is 24 years old. I still get fed up with how much it costs compared to my old Civic, but I can't really complain too much, all things considered.

Good idea. I've had my RS9000s for around five years now and they are getting pretty rusty ~ I think when I eventually replace them I'm going to do a custom job on them, maybe paint some dragons on them while I'm at it.

I have had my shocks for less than 20k kms, and the lower bar pins sheared, obviously they were never meant for real heavy duty conditions, 80,000kms on smooth paved/ light gravel roads is nothing compared to the abuse the roads up here put them through. the frost heaving in the roads is unreal, I have heard of People having the wheels on their cars torn off on a couple of the roads up here.

Just called pro comp, no warranty on their bar pins, but lifetime for manufacturing defects in the shocks themselves, so I guess I need to order new pins, at least the guy gave me part numbers i guess.

I would imagine it has to to with the temperature shifts more than the road quality, because I haven't treated them nicely or stuck to smooth roads. That's unfortunate that they don't consider a broken pin after 20k a manufacturers defect.
