Camperizing the Delishhh.....

Post by philmeup1 »

Hey Folks,

So I've had my '93 Mitsu L300 for a full year now and I absolutely love it!!! Before this I had several VW Westy's, 7 or 8 of them I think... I also own a '86 Winnebago LeSharo with a Renault drive train.

But I'm trying to simplify my life and I'm considering selling my LeSharo and camperizing my Delica. I've seen some incredible things on here done by some obviously talented people. I'm not one of those people.

So I'm just trying to come up with ideas on what I might do. Or sorry, what I'll have someone else do for me. Mines a high roof with the sky lights. I've added Thule Roof Racks and a Terzo Ladder since I've owned it. The roof top tents look pretty cool and practical. I guess it's set up for this now if I choose to go this way. And I was also thinking it would be nice if I could fabricate some sort of Westy style cabinetry with a kitchen set up inside...

So I guess I need to find a decent cabinet maker or someone who is good at fabricating near where I live Which is in peterborough, just north of Toronto in Ontario. If anyone wants to offer there ideas/opinions, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm constantly amazed at what some people do with their vehicles and the talent on this site.

Cheers, Phil

P.S. On the subject of campers, there's a proper Delica Camper for sale (full fiberglass rear camper) for sale on kijiji. It's in Barrie Ontario for just $18,000 buckaroos...........

The easiest way to camperize is to plop a westy kitchen cabinet in there. You get fridge, stove and sink in the smallest possible footprint. With a rooptop tent, I've found that with the addition of sitting some plastic cabinets/drawers behind the rear seat I have all I need as a camper.

Cut the roof off?? I guess if I had enough to drink I could pull that off.... I don't know how to weld so there's no worry about putting two Delicas together:)

I've seen the Westy sink set up on here. Unfortunately the best place to put it is right in front of the rear heater controls. Not that big of an issue I guess. And I can easily source out on of these cabinets with the contacts I have. So I guess I'll start with that for now.

It looks like the seats just unbolt from the floor. Is it that simple or is there more to it than that??

And I know there's been great discussion on the roof top tents here. I've been looking on line at these. Lots of manufacturers and choices out there...

I'll keep you posted

It's not a big deal about the heater controls. I just leave it on hot and control the temp with the front blower switch. Without the fan there's no airflow. Also when you open the rear cabinet door you can access the controls. It actually works out pretty well.
As far as removing the seats goes, first you have to unbolt the seat from the tracks, but then you have to remove the sliding cars from the tracks as well or else you stub your toes a lot. In order to do this you have to lift the tracks from the floor and remove the cross-bolt from the very ends of the tracks. This bolt keeps the car from coming right out the track. In order to lift the track you have to uncover the bolts mounting it to the floor. There are plugs of carpet at the very ends and in the middle of the track that cover the mounting bolts. Remove the plugs, take out the mounting bolts, lift the track, remove the cross bolt, and the cars will slip right out of the track. You can then bolt the track back down just to fill the slot that would be left if you tossed the track.

But once you cut the roof off you can stand!!! Priceless and on the raincoast you do not have to worry about drying out the van when you done camping.....than with a bed slide you still can cook/eat/change in the van standing with the bed setup!!!

Hey thedjjack, where do you get the raised roof? I would be interested to see if a breadloaf VW Westfalia pop top would fit. The vanagon is too wide, but a bread loaf one might be just right.

the roof is cut down form a dodge van...cut into 1/4s with a skill saw and glassed back together...

The older VW roof maybe close...I started with the roof off a 1983 poptop but decided after looking at it I had to 1/4 the roof and reglass it together and then do tent work...I suck at sewing :) and I like the gain of storage with the raised roof...

If you look hard on this site there is a Quebec home built poptop...well done

Ok, I love the high roof but I'm going to keep the roof the way it is. I will however, work on gettin out the middle seats so I can put the Westy cabinet inside. And I'm going to work up a rear bed of some sort. I'll also add a few storage bins and presto...

Home is where the Delica's parked!!!!!!!!!!
