Now that I have one, I have questions...

Post by RadarGrrl »

I'm putting this here, as opposed to L400 Technical, because these are more questions of operation, rather than maintenance and repair...

So...we picked up the Dalek yesterday...

Image

...and we spirited her home...

Image

...and we put her in the spot next to our beloved Wheezy-van, who has served us so well over the past four years, but is on her last legs and headed for that great parts bin in the sky very soon...

Image

...and we started poking about...

There's a few knobs and controls that we have questions about. Some, we know what they are but aren't sure about their use. Others, we haven't a clue what they do. Still others are controls that we should have, but can't find them (if they exist at all on these beasties). So here we go...

This is a throttle control...that much is obvious. So what is it used for?

Image

This one's a little trickier...the climate controls. What does that middle lever do? What does the 'Rear' button do?

Also, the artificial horizon doesn't appear to be working...might have to get the AVS Techs here on the airfield to crack it open...

Image

We don't have any clue what this animal does, and we can't even figure it out from the nebulous pictogram on the knob. It's underneath and to the left of the steering column.

Image

Lastly, and we obviously don't have a pic for this one, where is the rheostat for the dashboard lighting?

Beyond all this, we are totally enjoying the experience so far. We're taking her up and going for a shakedown cruise later today. There's back roads and logging trails to be explored!

The throttle is for cold days - pull it out and turn it to keep the revs up. A bit of a cruz control too... :O
There is no dimmer on the dash lamp... I know - everyone looks for it.
Can't help with the other ones, though that funny little symbol has been asked about before, I forgot what the answer was.
Have fun!

The last knob is to open a fresh sir intake for the cabin. Lots of info about it on the uk site.

The middle air control is the one I call "cold air in your face during long drives" control. It's nice because you can have cool air blowing in your face, while simultaneously enjoying heat from the heater.

The throttle control was on both of my delicas - and I never, ever used it. Maybe in cold climates. . .

As for the attitude indicator. . . they are really just a novelty, and are commonly broken. I wouldn't put much effort into fixing it myself. The one on my L300 works, and I have literally never looked at it.

I like the shot of your two vans together. That is a serious upgrade on the "cool" scale.

Now I'm confused (as per normal)...is this the lever on the heater controls or the knob under the steering wheel, to the left?

The last knob....

Actually is a flap that comes down and closes the intake to the air box going into the cabin for air
for vents and stuff to be heated.
You can check it's operation out by opening your hood. Taking notice of the air intake on the
passenger side above the batteries. You will see the air intake. If you adjust that knob
you will see it close off the intake. I really can't see a purpose for it at all. Perhaps
to keep a bunch of snow or in a high humidity situation - preventing moist/humid air
from getting sucked in and causing your front windshield from fogging up. But that is
also achieved by pushing the button for recirculating air. (I guess it would prevent the moisture
from entering closer to the source)

And one comment on the throttle control.. I wouldn't recommend it for cruise control.
Remember it doesn't disengage when you push the brake.. Get in to an accident and see
how your insurance handles that one. I use mine to rev the motor up in the mornings where
it is cold to help it warm up faster. I also set it the night before so when my command start
starts the motor the revs are where I want them to be.. along with heater controls :)

I don't have either of those knobs in mine - but I *DO* have a dash light dimmer.

Go figure.

Interesting. Where exactly is your dash light rheostat?

Thanks to the wonderful folk at CCA, I now have a much better idea of what these two knobs do, so time to experiment.

I'm not worried about dimming the dash anyway. I like to see my instruments.

It is to the right of the steering wheel, right next to the other standard switches. However, where you have the throttle and flap settings, mine has nothing at all.

Greetings Dalek. Your inclinometer has probably died due to the internal fluid drying up (common with delicii, I think the heat dries up the glue and the fluid leaks out). I assume they will be filled with either glycerin or mineral oil. We must meet up sometime. cheers, christine of The Tardis.

Gee! Did anyone answer the "Rear" button question? If it is like the L300's it turns on the fan in the rear of the van (Provided that you already have it set to "on" in the back control panel). Makes it nice on those cold days to warm up the entire van. Kinda hard to reach back there when you are driving.

If I can find the parts, I might take a stab at replacing it. We shall see.

I'd love to meet up...if I ever get back onto the mainland. It'll happen, of course...

The rear climate controls are something else I still have to explore. Do the front/main climate controls override these when the 'Rear' button is enabled, or do both really have to be set to 'On'? I guess I'll have to go and find out..

Mine's a '96 Exceed and I don't have either of those knobs or a dimmer but I DO have digital climate control with a "cold air in your face" button instead of a knob. And middle captains seats. Just goes to show the variety of options you could get!
