Alternator belt stretch and tension

Post by north54 »

Hey all, I recently did an alternator belt replacement, everything seemed to be running smooth. Bad squeak was gone and I felt like I was good to go.

I only put about 50km of driving in before I checked the belts, reason being I heard a little squeak starting. The alternator belts had so much slack that I thought the tensioner gave way. You can see the slack of the belts in this picture. But look at the tensioner bolt, its getting close to max. What gives?

So I retensioned the belts and they seem tight again. But now the tension bolt is at its limit and connot be tightened anymore. Keep in mind there is still about 8mm of deflection. I'm stumped on this one.

Tightened:

I feel like the new belts are the wrong kind but they are correct as per the Delica Wiki. Dayco---11A 1105

Any help is appreciated.
Cheers all,

Wrong size listed. Mine was like that as well. Had to go shorter.

Rattlenbang, thanks.

Well my first costly error. I guess I'll have 2 alternator belts for emergencies.

What part # did you use by chance?

Unfortunately, I don't recall as it was quite awhile ago. FYI, the part number is just the belt's measurement in mm in width and length. 11A 1105 is 11mm wide and 1105 mm long. I tried a few sizes till I got the right one. It's a very narrow range; just a little bit too short and you can't get it on, and a tiny bit too long and you can't get it tight enough. The one that worked was just a little bit smaller, likely the next size down in that width.
