Sony LCD NAV-TV
Sooo... I picked up my Delica yesterday and am pleased as punch - what a pleasure to drive!
One of the items mine came with is a dash mounted Sony LCD TV and console mounted NAVigation system and TV tuner - I thought it to be a DVD player at first until I got it home. Has anybody had experience with these? Is the NAV box also a DVD? It has a CD/DVD size slot in the box which I guess would hold the mapping CD (???).
The TV works pretty nicely but can only be on when the Deli is switched to "Acc." (not running) - it turns itself off when the ignition is in the "run" mode - presumably a safety feature. Haven't tried the NAV feature with engine running but I would hope it stays on - would be a bummer to have to stop and shut off to learn that I'm lost.
Tried a quick search on Google but need to find the model number of mine first. I've seen this in a couple other Deli's too so I assume someone has one similar. I would appreciate any input I can get.
Thanks!

Re: Sony LCD NAV-TV
If the screen is where the driver can see it, it has to be wired to not show the video when the engine is one or it is against the law. There was another thread about someone that had an in-dash dvd player that was stolen and ICBC wasn't going to give him any of the $1500 it cost for that reason but they ended up giving him have for some reason.jaggedfish wrote:Sooo... Re: Sony LCD NAV-TV
Interesting. So mine is wired correctly for the TV portion as I suspected. The difference comes for the theoretical operation of the navigaton system... all of the factory in-car nav's I have seen are full time on (even turn on automatically when starting the car). Presumably there must be a difference between tv and nav.
Would be nice if the wife could watch while I drive tho.... we're past the "talking to each other" stage
All this said it appears it's somewhat pointless anyway... there isn't information outside of Japan for this particular system and it doesn't appear to be of any use othr than for TV anyway. Would like to see if I can hook up DVD tho... better than trying to balance my laptop on the dash while waiting for ferries.

You can choose another wire to provide power to the screen so it operates while driving, it is illegal. I think he hoped it would result in "Anti-Back-Seat-Driving by The Spouse", no such luck. Is useful in ferry lineups etc. Cheers, Christine.

Re: Sony LCD NAV-TV
there is also the option on most dvd players to send the signal to a second screen so you could install a flip down or headrest screen in the back and that will work with the engine on. I suppose you might get away with installing one on the dash somewhere pointed away from the driver but I think that is pushing it a bit :)TardisDeli wrote:You can choose another wire to provide power to the screen so it operates while driving, it is illegal. Re: Sony LCD NAV-TV
I am not that desperate really... more of a tongue-in-cheek comment re: talking to each other. Most of the time "She-to-be-obeyed" sleeps on the rides home and the only time the TV shutting off would actually be a problem (if you could call it that) would be starting up and driving on to the ferry only to be parked again for another 40 minutes (Sunshine Coast ferry).
Christine's comment on back seat diving DOES ring familiar tho - kinda funny - on my wife's first ride (only one so far) she thought I was driving WAY to close to the shoulder on the right. I checked several times on my road positioning and was comfortably in the center of the lane. Funny how your whole perception changes when everything is backwards.
As far as the literal version of back seat driving goes.... that's what the reversing bench is good for...

Re: Sony LCD NAV-TV
Jaggedfish,
I'd installed a simple system behind the inter-seat console last summer for the kids to watch on road trips or to watch when we're camping. I just used a $30 flat screen TV mount from Future Shop mounted sideways and wired it in to charge while the vehicle is running, it also has a six hour battery in the unit so it works well for watching while the engines not running. I never knew kids could be soooo quiet!!

Patty,
The DVD player was $200.00 from the return bin in Future Shop and the mount was from the same place. If you think the carpet is clean you should see the rest of the vehicle, I'm kinda weird that way.

Nice setup, are you still able to use your cup holders when the DVD player is not playing?

Re: Sony LCD NAV-TV
The centre arm console lid will now only go straight up and I don't remove the DVD unit, so you do lose the ability to flip the top right over and use the two built in cup holders. I've got to be honest though I never understood that arrangement as they were behind the driver and front passenger, so I don't really care. I see no reason why a play station wouldn't work as the unit has normal input/output jacks (they come with it). It also has two headphone jacks, the problem I've found is finding headphones with extra long cords (I've been using two sets of Air Canada ones as they are quite long and reach the two rear captains chairs). The built in speakers are also very good!!
Cheers!!

You can get headphone extension cords pretty cheap at most electronics stores or computer stores.Fanny Bay Delica wrote:The centre arm console lid will now only go straight up and I don't remove the DVD unit, so you do lose the ability to flip the top right over and use the two built in cup holders. Re: Sony LCD NAV-TV
Andy,
Nice setup, very clean looking (the carpet too)!... just catching up with the postings this morning...
I like the idea of it having it's own power too, especially when we need cranking power in the cold weather.
Do you have a TV receiver with that?
Both TV's in mine have receivers and antennae which allows me to watch the news when I'm bored (and not driving). I have thought of reconfiguring everything but haven't had the time to tinker yet. My rear TV is the original factory option Panasonic with VCR (old school
... like me) which I am tempted to keep just for posterity - if it works... the wiring has been disconnected. It sits in the same place as yours and... if you have an 8 seater, you can fold the front bench flat and recline the back bench and you can watch in comfort with your feet up
I come from the era of custom vans and as I work in architecture, I would like to design a funky Japanese Zen style space in the back - just for fun - with some of the luxuries of home (like TV). A cool rolling office of sorts keeping with the original Mitsubishi luxury/utility intent. And... when I get around to changing fuel lines, etc... a good "green" alternative. That will be a post for later but fun to think about anyway.
Cheers!
