It fired up on its own for it's programmed 2hr run.

I found my spot temp gun thing, so.. after one hour I lifted the hood..

.. for reference the temp on cold metal beside the engine.

Remember this is not plugged in.. no block heater nor oil pan heater. Just the espar doing it's thing.

It is nice to see some actual temperatures involved with it working.

I assume the cab was toasty warn too?

This is exactly what I was looking for. Great job on the install!! Did you set it up to warm the cab too?

No the cab wasn't warm.. the only way to get heat in there would be if the fan was on and that would be way to big a draw on just the one battery. I think you'd need a cab heater to get any amount of heat in there when it's -30.

However, once you start the van up after that heater's been going, the water temp comes right up and you get heat almost as soon as you start driving.

Depending on how hour D5 is plumbed though, you should be able to run the dash fan and pull heat from the passenger heater core. If you have the 7-Day Espar timer it has some extra wires for this. So it can hear both the cab and engine.

However, it does put more of a drain on the battery as you have noted.

Their are cab-only heaters that heat air, but the hydronic can hear both the block and the cabin.

They hydronic heaters heat the coolant - and as long as it is plumbed to the internal heater side first, you can have a timer trigger the cab fan and it will defrost and warm the cabin.

This way you can use it like a block heater, or as a way to heat your cabin. You can also use the hydronic as a heat booster in extremely cold weather.

In the short amount of experience I've had with my heater.. I don't think it could be an effective cab warmer.. especially with the size a delica's cabin.
So far I havent seen the espar get the water temp gauge up into the green.. remember when I used my heat sensor gun gadget thing the best temp I saw was 40C. That won't get the cab warm.. unless it's being used for a BC 'winter'. And the interior fan is a HUGE draw on the battery!.. Even on low. I have a cheap voltmeter hooked up and it's surprising it's draw..even with engine running.

I had a few beers the other night and bid on a used Snugger cabin heater for a decent price.. didn't think I was going to get it.. looks like I won. Happy I got a cabin heater for cheap(er)... angry I used beer and ebay together again.

we have these units fitted as standard on some of our vehicles here in the UK, VW fit them to boost the cabin heater output and their range of mpv's (sharan) as the engine burns fuel so efficiently that it cant provide enough heat to heat the cabin! they only run when the engine is running due to the load they draw from the battery! there was an option for a second battery set up so that the heater could be used to warm the cabin, but it only had a 30 min run time as it would have killed the battery!

my friend has a Seat Alhambra with one fitted, it's set to come one when the ambient temp is low enough for it to be needed to boost the heater output....so his wife (blonde) goes to the local gas station to fill up, as she starts the car the aux heater kicks in for the first time that year..... clouds of grey smoke fire out from under the car!! she panics and gets out screaming! running into the gas station screaming that her cars on fire and her kids are still strapped in their seats in the back! then while the assistant is dragging the kids out the alledgedly burning car she ring up hubby and tells him what going on....... he wasnt amused
be ready for the clouds of smoke on start up when the glow plug and combustion chamber start to soot up!
