Gasket replacement for sliding windows

Post by Erich »

I've got the gaskets coming, and managed to find a wrecked Vanwagon here in Seattle to see how it all goes together(or comes apart) so I wouldn't break anything on my own van. First, from what I can see, the inside trim piece comes off, and then the windows are held in by four spring clips. With these off, the window frames complete come out. Next the center piece in each frame comes out with the removal of two screws. But what I can't figure out, is how to remove the glass in order to replace the rubber gasket/slider track. I got one out of the wreck by spreading the frame slightly and popping the glass out, but this doesn't seem logical. The windows are too tight in the frames to lift like a sliding door. So what's the trick to getting the glass out?

A little pressure is all you need - http://www.mdocuk.co.uk/forums/viewtopi ... e1fd416ea3

Let me know how those seals work out. I tried some aftermarket channel runners and they didn't work. Sourcing a vanwagon is a good idea.

Thanks for the tip. That's exactly how I got the one glass(the other was broken) out of the wreck. There must be some sort of tool I could use to spread the window frame. That way it would be easier to get them back in, once the new channels are in. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm curious to know where you got new seals. My Mitsu and my Toyota van could both use new ones.
