Post by cschofield6 »

Ive noticed when im coming to a stop in my van, right before i come to a complete stop, my van starts to idle very rough, almost like its about to stall out, then i come to a complete stop and it levels back out to normal. No clue what it would be. ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks

When was the last time you changed your air filter element?

It's pretty easy once you've done it, in fact it's pretty easy if you haven't done it. Just behind the front right wheel is where you'll find the air filter, easy to see if you are laying on the ground and looking up. It's cylindrical in shape, with two snaps that frees the lower dust trap. Once you have that off there is a wing nut that you undo and once that is off the filter element should slide right out.

The way to check it is to shine a light, say a flash light or a trouble light up against the outside of it then look down the inside and see how much light is getting through. The less light, the dirtier it is. Another thing to look for is the colour of the paper in the filter element. It should be pure white, the greyer it is , the dirtier it is.

The dirtier the element, the less air gets to the engine. The less air in the engine the less combustion, which leads to black smoke coming out of your tail pipe (which is unburnt diesel). I typically change my air filter element two to three times a year, depending on where I've been driving my wagon. The dustier the environment more often you should change the filter.

Another thing you can do is periodically take an air blower and blast the dust outwards which will help the filter element to last longer.

In your case, from your description, I'd replace it.

Falco.
