Fuel Pump Swap: Out a tooth?

Post by Feds »

Just tried to start the van after the fuel pump swapstravaganza. First things first, I'm just trying to see if the pump is timed right, so there's no intercooler on.

It was hard to start, lots of smoke, and a few times it caught, then died in a cloud of smoke. Once it warmed up a bit, I got a very lumpy idle, and lots of smoke; as shown in the video below:

The second part of the issue is that I have a part left over. It's a boost/vacuum hose, about 7 inches long. It's not the one from the turbo to the pressure compensator at the top of the injection pump. I honestly can't find where it's supposed to go. Picture attached:

So: Am I out a tooth, or is this little hose causing the poor idle and smoke?

Thanks for the help.

Tooth out :(

From memory the only hoses of that size on the pump are the turbo to boost enrichment hose and the vacuum idle-up hose. Strangely it looks exactly like the former which you already have....

between the IP and the turbo assembly there are 2 rubber hose lengths (PN 07074B and 07074C)

There is also a rubber hose (PN 12782) near the bottom of the turbo at the waste gate actuator.

There is a similar line which attaches from a steel line on the side of the fuel pump side of the engine just below the cylinder head and feeds the manifold pressure compensator or LDA (the diaphragm pot) on top of the fuel pump. Check there. If not how about the fuel injector leak off return hose?

You'll find it.
