Quick answers to fuel capacity and 4WD

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Quick answers to fuel capacity and 4WD

Post by mararmeisto »

Noticed there have been repeated question about two things in particular. I just received my copy of a JPNZ L300 Delica manual and have been leafing through it this evening.

Fuel capacity: 75 litres.
Low fuel warning light: about 7 litres remaining.

4WD can be shifted on the fly as long as the WHEEL LOCK light is lit; otherwise, 4WD needs to be shifted while in PARK or NEUTRAL. To unlock the hubs, reverse the vehicle a few metres until the WHEEL LOCK light extinguishes.

further clarification, not just foot on the brake, but at a complete stop. (what gear is irrelevant as long as you're not moving)
4WD can be shifted on the fly as long as the WHEEL LOCK light is lit
more clarification, this should only be done when travelling in a straight line and while all 4 wheels are turning at the same speed (once you start to spin the tires it is TOO LATE to shift to 4wd!!)

Hm, I don't have a wheel lock indicator, just a green light to show when the 4WD is engaged. Does that mean I have auto hubs? The 4WD is sweeet! It's nice to trundle past all the Honda's in the ditch, not to mention people in trucks who stop halfway up a hill covered in ice and get stuck(We had a wee bit of weather in Victoria. Over here a wee bit is all you need!)

If you're getting the traction that it sounds like you are....then seems your 4WD is working AOK - which leads me to believe that your wheel lock lamp is simply burned out (reasonably common problem it seems). If that is the case, you'll still want to operate as indicated previously in this post and reverse your vehicle to unlock the hubs after taking it out of 4WD and once you're sure you won't need it again. The hubs will last longer and you'll have better fuel economy when unlocked. I found that backing up to unlock has been variable to extinguish the lamp - normally only about 3 metres, but once as far as 10M or thereabouts.

And yes, all L300 came with factory auto hubs - but some people have changed to manual by way of preference, or to get the specific brand they wished.

Auto = 75 L
Manual = 55 L

I believe according to some specs site and my estimation the manual is 60L total, 10 of which is reserve (empty on the guage/light comes on). Could easily be 65 or 55 I've never drained it dry.

Yes, there are different capacities for fuel:

2WD: 56 litres (don't know if any of us have these, and they would be gasoline?)
4WD M/T: 60 litres
4WD A/T: 75 litres

All indicate about 7 litres remaining when the little fuel pump light comes on.

Of course with so many different variations of these vehicle, there could be a 2WD with a bigger tank out there, who knows...

This would explain why mine takes 50+ litres when I'm got a nearly empty tank.

How much room underneath for an auxiliary fuel tank or a spare? Where is everyone putting their WVO tank? Just wondering.

seems to be a lot of room around the existing tanks (not enough to add extra tanks, but I was considering the possibility of replacing the existing tanks with larger ones) I'd like to have a capacity of about 90-100L ideally (I'm having trouble adapting to the short range of these vehicles, my last car did 700+ km on a tank, so I find 600 (or sometimes less) to be a little short on the highway)

Green1: What vehicle did you have before that you were getting greater than 700 km to a tank? A VW Jetta (diesel)? A large pickup truck with dual tanks?

a 1983 mercedes 300sd turbo-diesel (with the stock 77 litre tank)
And no, the Volkswagen TDIs do WAY better than 700km, my father's passat gets closer to 1500km/tank (combine TDI efficiency with the 90L tank that those things came with!)
most vehicles have a range of over 600km, the Delica is definitely below average on range.

Which vehicles would those be? Best I've ever really got was 600km on the highway, but averaged around 500km.

I too would like a bigger tank. Where is the fuel tank on the underside of these?

on the automatics there are 2 tanks, they are quite obvious if you look, one near the side steps, and the other further back.

my bladder lasts longer than that... I don't like the extra forced stops...
