Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Runaway diesel l300, Need Part.

Post by vulcan »

I have a very strange dieseling problem. My Turbo was not working so I swapped it out this weekend for a used one. Test drive started well. Minimal smoke. Heard turbo spooling. better power. and then, squeeling from turbo, I assume bearing. started heading back to the shop, but.. The squeeling stopped, the smoke started, lots, and then the engine started dieseling. Made it back to the shop but could not turn off. It revved to about 3000 rpm for quite some time while I franticly disconnected all fuel lines and plugged air intake. finally it quit running but not before overheating. After it quit the top rad hose blew big time. Sounded like a shotgun blast. wow. What a lot of smoke and steam. After an hour I tried turning it over and it did, so not seized but I stopped looking at it. I needed to think.
Only thing I can think of for the cause is, the oil flowing through the turbo bypassed a seal or bearing and engine oil was flowing into the intake. Oil level was not showing on dipstick after this fiasco. It was on full, and fresh when I started.

That was quick action to block the intake.... when you do drain the oil check for metal fines in the fluid stream. The oil is also a coolant medium so a sudden loss of oil would translate into increased engine temps. Which explains why the top rad hose popped off.

Your engine may have suffered some damage but your quick thinking likely prevented the engine from blowing apart.

Your thoughts on the oil seals in the turbo being the problem are very likely.....the oil pump pushes lube oil into the turbo bearings and it can easily end up being atomized in the intake stream where it will eventually hit the cylinder and combust creating a run away condition.

I was talking to my father about diesel engine tech and there is a device that can installed at the intakes of diesel engines that blocks the intake air in the event of a run-away engine....this is a mandatory device for industrial sites where natural gas may be present which would cause a diesel engine to run-on even after the key was shut off. The company we discussed is in Edmonton.
Yeah I joined the Dark Side because the medical plan is top shelf!

Well, an update.
Replaced the defective turbo, and rad hose.
Only needed 5 litres of oil, out of 7.2 so I guess I didn't run it quite dry. Lol.
Also all new coolant of course.
Hard to start and finally ran on three cylinders. Turns out no. 2 injector was seized. Looked very overheated so am looking for a new one.
I think and hope this is all the damage there is.
Wish me Luck.
P.S. If anyone has one, New or Used for sale in the south okanagan, please contact me.
The Saga Continues.
Replaced all injectors. Helped performance and smoke, slightly.
Looking for problems everywhere. I'm in construction so a lot out of my league. checked all the hoses etc. look good. Finally found some small manifold leaks sooo, ordered new gasket.
Today, took manifolds off, hoping to cure my problem. All the while thinking these little leaks can't be my problem. Mixed blessing is, I found a HUGE crack at the bottom, centre of my exhaust manifold. Like, 1/4 " by 2". Obviously this would cause my extreme poor performance and black smoke.
That's the good news. Problem now is I have to source an exhaust manifold.
Anybody in the south Okanagan have one laying around? Lol.
