Glow Plug Conversion Info

Post by JMK »

I stumbled across this information about 'super glow' systems (while I was trying to find out how to find a Tach signal) which I think the Delica also uses. I thought some may find it of interest in relation to the cold start issues. Also it begs the question that maybe someone can answer, where is the glow computer, and could you get newer 12V glow plugs for the Delica? I know the other Deli here in Banff has had a manual glow plug system installed by Wayne at Luxury and he swears by it.
A number of different glow plug systems were used on factory Toyota diesels. Many have a "super glow" system with a small computer and two relays. In these systems, 6V or 7V glow plugs are installed in the engine. The computer triggers one relay to send a full 12V to the glow plugs for just a second, and then triggers the other relay to send 6 or 7 V through a resistor, until a sensor in the engine block is warm. The glow computer is hard to find, and also prone to failure. Many people (including me) just rig up a "push to glow" button. I installed a momentary push button switch in the dash right below the emergency blinker switch. This goes to a relay under the hood, which sends current to the glow plugs via a big resistor that's mounted to the bottom of the intake manifold. Some people get rid of the resistor and replace the 6/7V glow plugs with newer 12V plugs. Don't run the 6/7V plugs without the resistor though -- you'll quickly fry them.

The glow plug controller is in the driver's side B pillar. Remove the trim, undo the seatbelt anchor and it's the gold box down inside. You have to remove some of the air cleaner hardware to get at the bottom mounting bolt.

I posted a picture of the location when I repaired my controller last fall. Look in http://www.delica.ca/forum/help-glowplu ... -1382.html.

Thanks Laura,

That's good to know. Here's another one for you then. Would you know where to locate the Revolution Pic up that feeds the Tach? I thought it would be around the Bell Housing but I just crawled underneath and don't see any likely candidates.

The tach is fed off the alternator. The wire is blue, the only one connected in the pictures here:

Note that this is not a stock alternator, and will look different that yours.

If you unwrap the wire on this connector, there should be 2 wires, one for the dash light and one for the tach.

Hope this makes sense. I have to go back a bit in the memory bank to recall the original alternator.

Thanks James,

When I emailed that pic to our mechanic friend who is wintering in Mexico he said it did not look like the alternator had the required 'W' terminal where I could pickup that signal. However, it sounds like it may be worth a try.
