I read in the L300 section that the filter and gasket is the same as the same year Montero
I want to confirm: is the L400 trans gasket and filter the same as the same year Montero?
I read the total capacity of the transmission is 8.5L
How much fluid comes out when I drop the pan and filter vs. just the drain plug?

You want the transmission gasket and filter for the 3.5 litre V6 montero - that is compatible with the l400.
I have not done it yet, but apparently dropping the pan gets more oil out. A great deal remains in the transmission however.
For my part, I will be installing an oil filter style bypass for the transmission. This allows for better filtration and more oil volume.

Right about 5l comes out when draining the pan, so 3.5l stays in the trans/cooler

Do you have a link for the filter you're referring to? Or is it a custom job?

Ok, is there an easy way to get the rest out? I have the wrong fluid in from the previous owner and I want to get as much out as I can

I have never had the tranny filter out of my Delica so I am not sure if the filter is just metal mesh or a paper.
If its metal mesh then changing the filter won't do much. And the torque converter holds lots of fluid too and the only way to get it completely changed is to do a powered flush.
My Xterra had this every 4 years. Never a tranny problem in over 12 years of ownership.

You're correct lots of fluid remains in the torque convertor. To add to your "Power Flush idea ."
To power flush all the old fluid:
Buy 8.5 litres of new fluid and a narrow funnel to refill the transmission. Run the engine till the transmission is very warm. Note the fluid level on the dipstick. Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid from the pan. Replace the plug and overfill the pan.
Break the "hot" stainless tubing to the trans cooler to a drain pan and start the engine.
Monitor the dipstick level and overfill the pan as the level drops. Shut off the engine each time.
Pump out the trans fluid till the colour changes to that of the new fluid and quickly rejoin the tubing. Top up or drain the pan to the previously noted dipstick level and recheck after running the vehicle.
Dispose of the old Diamond Queen 3 fluid and check for leaks. Canadian Tire sells it and accepts old oil.
I've done this on all my vehicles and it's the same way the shops do it. If you're not comfortable with this take it to a transmission shop.

Fluid level changes so much from hot to cold operation that IMHO i'd fill to what was there before.Why does the original level matter? Can't I just refill to the specific range on the dip stick?
