Should I buy this van?

Post by jthom »

I realize this is not a Hiace forum, but being a Delica owner for the past 6 years I trust the opinions I've found here.
So...
Our trio is looking for a new tour van for the summer (to Moncton NB and back to Vancouver) and came across this:

We are considering buying it.
Anything to be cautious about?

Thanks for your help :)

If I was considering dropping 10K on a vehicle I would put a condition into the sale that the unit must be put through a proper inspection. Then I can decide if the issues are livable or or not......I would also use that as a negotiating point. For example: A bad battery +/or weak charging system would not prevent me buying a vehicle but it would make me adjust my offer to compensate for the work.

You don't want to inherit someones problem child...looking good is only part of the equation, it has be check out mechanically too.

Why didn't they post exterior pics? These yota vans are known for door/fender corrosion which can be horrid on some units.

What engine does it have? Some toyota diesel engines are garbage and have critical head warping issues. Check the toyota forums for which engines to stay away from. Check the Prado sites there is a common 4 banger diesel out there that is pure junk!

Thanks Big-Bird - you just helped us dodge a lemon.

We've moved on to this one (gas engine):

Do you know of any common issues with these hiace vans?

Thanks for your time - again, a HUGE help, thank you.

The Regius is a better built unit. Not plagued by the issues of its earlier cousin.
Body panels have.better corrosion resistance, its also a better shape which won't act like a brick in the wind....sorry L300 Owners (Ha).

How did you dodge a lemon? I am curious.

Thanks again - great info.

Actually, we initially concluded the first vehicle was a likely a lemon because when we asked the owner questions inspired by your observations, we didn't receive any reply. But since then the owner has sent a photo of the exterior and it doesn't look so bad (logo is due to the fact that the van was a rental for a "short period"):

We are still waiting to hear what specific engine it has, but are now trying to decide between these two vans.

Leaning towards the Regius as it looks more fuel efficient, and since it is newer it has a lot of bells and whistles (eg. backup cam).

Plus we're thinking a fridge/camping features will just add a lot of weight that we may not need. Better to throw a cooler and a camping stove into the van and call it a day?

Again, thanks for your help - if you have anything further to add to assist in our final choice that would be extremely welcome. :)
